1 Samuel 1:22
“After the boy is weaned, I will take him and present him before the Lord, and he will live there always.”
Time and time again we see in Scripture women who are barren having children and those children turning out to be very special.
Sarah was barren until well beyond normal childbearing age when she had Isaac (see Genesis 18:11-12). Rebekah was barren until Jacob and Esau were born (see Genesis 25:21-26). Rachel was barren until Joseph was born (see Genesis 30:1 & 22-23). Manoah’s wife was barren until Samson was born (see Judges 13:2-5). Ruth was barren until Obed was born (see Ruth 1:4 & 4:13) and here, Hannah was barren until Samuel was born.
Interesting, isn’t it? Each of these women desperately wanted children but they were barren and cried out to God in deep distress. He heard their cry and gave them exceptional children. They were all exceptional from conception. It didn’t just happen as they grew up, although their mother’s influence undoubtedly had an enormous effect on each one. Here, Hannah’s influence was to ‘give up’ her child for the Lord’s service. Yes, she longed to be a mother in Israel but more than that, she wanted her son to serve the Lord all the days of his life - even from the time he was weaned.
May I encourage you today if you are barren? God hasn’t changed - God is still able to open the womb of a barren woman and bring forth a child. It has been a joy and privilege for me to pray with barren women and later see them carrying their own babies in their arms. Our God is a God of miracles and love.
Maybe you need to share your ‘secret’ with your pastor, elder or cell/small group leader and let them pray a prayer of faith and agreement with you. If you have done that - hold on to the fact that God is able to do it and He is a God of love - a good God and His ways are best and His timing perfect. If you have ‘adopted’ children, treat them as if they are your very own and rear them in just the same way.
If you are pregnant today, can I encourage you to pray for the baby(ies) in your womb? Pray a blessing and speak positively over them and talk joyfully to them. Determine even now to bring them up to know, love and serve Jesus Christ as Lord.
If you have recently had a baby or you have young children, dedicate them to the Lord for His service as soon as you can and then follow through on your responsibility to make Jesus a real and loved member of the family.
Never forget this too - God loves our children even more than we do and He will never leave them nor forsake them. Trust Him.
If you have never had children, remember this - God is able to use your life to influence children through Sunday School, Bible-in-Schools programmes, youth work, and camps or through praying for one or two every day. Be a ‘spiritual’ parent to a child or new Christian.
And let’s all go on to be grandparents who do the same things.
