Amos 5:24

“But let justice roll on like a river, righteousness like a never-failing stream!”

Doesn’t your spirit arise and say “Amen, Lord let it be”?

Yet God’s heart’s cry to Israel is the same for us too. So often the prophecies given in the Old Testament times are totally and equally relevant for us as well.

Listen, “You trample on the poor and force him to give you grain. Therefore, though you have built stone mansions, you will not live in them; though you have planted lush vineyards, you will not drink their wine. For I know how many are your offences and how great your sins. You oppress the righteous and take bribes and you deprive the poor of justice in the courts. Therefore the prudent man keeps quiet in such times, for the times are evil. Seek good, not evil, that you may live. Then the Lord God Almighty will be with you, just as you say He is. Hate evil, love good; maintain justice in the courts” (Amos 5:11-12).

It is a sad truth that history teaches us that we do not learn anything from history. Whenever a nation turns away from God, blessings cease and curses rise. Injustice and corrupt government take over and economic, moral and environmental disasters follow, just as surely as night follows day. But where is the wise man or woman who has learnt the lesson?

Unfortunately, the same happens in the Church. As we allow tradition and programmes to take over – God leaves.

“I hate, I despise your religious feasts; I can’t stand your assemblies. Even though you bring Me burnt offerings and grain offerings, I will not accept them” (v 21).

“Away with the noise of your songs! I will not listen to the music of your harps. BUT let justice roll on like a river, righteousness like a never ending stream!” (v 23-24)

We can change society. We don’t have to put up with the status quo. Start being different. Stand up for Jesus and His Word and show by your lifestyle and your family values that there is a better way.

As God said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance… the Lord looks at the heart” (1 Samuel 16:7).

Take time out today to allow God to search your heart and bring back a Godly perspective to your life. Take time for true worship to flow.

Never forget this. God is a good God, not a ‘religious’ God (see 1 Corinthians 13). Good economics don’t make a family or nation prosperous. Prosperity comes from following the Lord, walking in His Truth and Righteousness and maintaining a vibrant relationship with Him. (See also Psalm 1.)
