Romans 16:19-20

“I want you to be wise about what is good, and innocent about what is evil. The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet. The grace of our Lord Jesus be with you.”

When I was a teenager, my peers pressured me saying otherwise.

They said, “You need to go into the world and experience what they do before you will be able to relate or talk meaningfully to them.”

That is a lie of Satan. What happened was that all those who did go into the world, backslid and left the church. Yes, we do need to go to where the people are. Yes, we do need to love them, reach them and win them. But they want to see light so that they can be drawn to it. They don’t want to see some indistinct glow.

Some people think it is clever to ‘know all’ about the ‘world’ and its evil. No, it is not. Be “Innocent [and ignorant] about what is evil.”

The way to discern the counterfeit – which we need to be able to do more and more as the enemy disguises himself “as an angel of light” (2 Corinthians 11:14) – is by concentrating on the genuine.

I shall never forget my time as a teller in the bank. One office was in the dockland area of a city. During the course of the day, I would have to count literally thousands of bank notes. Understandably I became very quick. But even as I was speeding through a pile, I would throw one out – much to the dismay of the customer. On closer examination, we would find it was a forgery. Did I study forgeries? No. I touched and handled the genuine.

Jesus said, “If you hold to My teaching, you are really My disciples. Then you will know the Truth, and the Truth will set you free” (John 8:31-32). You see, we have to hold to His teaching.

Oh, the enemy will make the world very attractive to our carnal and sensual natures – and let’s not deceive ourselves – we all have that side to us – and we are all vulnerable. But Paul says, Be “innocent.” Don’t watch those films, T.V. programmes, or videos. Don’t look up those harmful but ‘attractive’ web-sites. Don’t listen to that music or those radio stations, and don’t read those papers and magazines or ‘gossip’ columns.

Try and look the other way in the petrol station and dairies. Better still ask them to desist having those items for sale. Yes, censor what your children watch because the world won’t. Even T.V. News time needs censoring today. Don’t allow evil to come into your home through the ‘back door’ – T.V./Videos/DVDs/music/computer games or the internet.

Be “innocent about what is evil.” How do we discern evil? By being “Wise about what is good”. If you want to know what is good – read Philippians: “Whatever is true, noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent or praiseworthy” (4:8).

Freedom brings censorship. A lack of censorship brings slavery – don’t get conned by the enemy into believing otherwise.

Hey, it is worth it. Why? Because “the God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet.” That is his ordained position (see Genesis 3:15). It’s a ‘Ring of Truth’!

If you do what this verse says, then – “The grace of our Lord Jesus [will] be with you.”
