Jeremiah 51:5

“For Israel and Judah have not been forsaken by their God, the Lord Almighty, though their land is full of guilt before the Holy One of Israel.”

I’m going to leave the book of Jeremiah here.

I realise we have jumped on apace but we need to move on. However, before we depart, we need to read this verse. We need to memorise it and never forget it. It is one of the most profound in the whole of Scripture. It’s a ‘Ring of Truth’!

In Chapter 15, we read how God would not listen even if Moses and Samuel stood in front of Him and interceded for the nation, and yet we read here that neither Israel nor Judah “have been forsaken... though their land is full of guilt.” How do we reconcile the two?

Firstly, God deals with sin sooner or later.

Secondly, God chose Israel – Israel did not choose God.

Thirdly, God is a Covenant-keeping God – when He makes a Covenant, it is everlasting.

Jesus repeats this for us, “You did not choose Me, but I chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit – fruit that will last” (John 15:16).

Our salvation is not up to us – it never has been. It is not even up to me once I have accepted Christ. If it were, I would not be able to keep it – I would lose it. But no, it is totally and completely up to God. (See also Colossians 2:6.)

Our spiritual rewards in heaven are a whole different issue, which I cannot deal with here, but my salvation is up to God. That is why I am secure in God. As I have said before, if God ever gave up on Israel, He could give up on me – but He never has – Not here in Jeremiah; not when they crucified their Saviour, the King of Glory; not even when they rejected their Messiah. God has never forsaken Israel or Judah – nor will He forsake us.

Yes, they had to endure the consequences of their rebellion, selfishness, wilfulness and independence (and still do) – but God is still God. I may fail ‘by accident’ ‘my humanity’ or deliberately – but God remains faithful. (See also Isaiah 49:15.)

Do I hear you say, “Hallelujah!”? Go on – you should. He is faithful to the very end. He constantly tries to draw us back to Himself and lovingly and longingly waits for us to return. He will wait right until the end. His love is totally and utterly unconditional. He chose to be our God. He chose to draw us to Himself. He chose for us to be His children.

And God has not changed. He waits for you and me to return to Him. His arms are constantly outstretched towards us. He has paid the price for us to return. This is our eternal security. (See also Luke 15:11-24.)

It is not up to us – it is up to Him and Him alone.
