1 Kings 3:9
“So give your servant a discerning heart to govern Your people and to distinguish between right and wrong. For who is able to govern this great people of Yours?”
At a time when he was worshipping God, God appeared to Solomon in a dream. God said to him, “Ask for whatever you want Me to give you” (v 5). Solomon’s reply is our verse for today.
His reply pleased the Lord and He said, “Since you have asked for this and not long life or wealth for yourself, nor have asked for the death of your enemies but for discernment in administering justice, I will do what you have asked ... Moreover, I will give you what you have not asked for - both riches and honour - so that in your lifetime you will have no equal among kings. And if you walk in My ways and obey My statutes and commands as David your father did, I will give you long life” (v 11 - 14).
“What would you ask for?” Or maybe, “What have you asked for?” God wants to give us His best but so often our attitudes and character temper it (see James 4:2-4). Most character is developed through the hard times rather than the easy times. None of us relish training and discipline and yet those are the times we, as people, grow the most.
Very few people in the history of the world have managed to ‘handle wealth’ well. Even Solomon struggled and he must have been one of if not the wealthiest people this world has ever known.
We’ve certainly realised, even in our lives, the times which were the easiest in a lot of ways were when we had to trust the Lord for our ‘daily bread’. When we did have money in the bank:
a) It never seemed to last
b) Our house price fell dramatically before we were able to sell it
c) The exchange rate went drastically against us and
d) Inflation became rampant.
Investments and interest rates can be very volatile - especially deposit ones. When you have wealth you wonder what to do with it and how to protect it. If you haven’t got it - it doesn’t even have to enter your mind.
Can I challenge you - even as I have been challenged?
If God said to you today, “Ask whatever you want Me to give you.” what would be your answer?
Don’t treat this lightly - work it through - because He is listening.
He actually wants to give you the desires of your heart. (See also Psalm 37:3-7.)
