1 Corinthians 11:23-26

“For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night He was betrayed, took Bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, ‘This is My Body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of Me.’ In the same way, after supper He took the Cup, saying, ‘This Cup is the New Covenant in My Blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of Me.’ For whenever you eat this Bread and drink this Cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes.”

Communion. Remembering Jesus. It’s a ‘Ring of Truth’!

Once more, once less. The Lord’s Supper is called a ‘Feast’. Yes, it is ‘only bread and only wine’ (or grape or fruit juice) but to us who believe, these elements represent the Body and Blood of Jesus. Yes, they are only symbols – we don’t believe they actually become His flesh and His Blood physically – but we acknowledge that is what they represent. They are symbols of the King – that is why it is a ‘Feast’. We celebrate it until the King comes.

They are also symbols of a death. Jesus’ life in His Body and Blood were given for you and me. He was brutally crucified. His Body was whipped until His Blood flowed from His back; it flowed from His head because of the Crown of Thorns; it flowed from His hands and His feet because of the nails and it flowed from His side because of the sword that was thrust into it (see John 19).

“There were many who were appalled at Him – His was appearance so disfigured beyond that of any man and His form marred beyond human likeness” (Isaiah 52:14). He didn’t even look like a human being any more; He was so wickedly treated. Yes, His Body and His Blood were given for you and me.

When we take the Lord’s Supper, we ‘proclaim the Lord’s death’. We cannot miss the point or the picture. Jesus ‘gave’ us the Feast – to remember and celebrate. He waited until the night He was betrayed for utmost impact. There could be no possible reason to miss the relevance both then and throughout all time and eternity.

When was it? At Passover. The Hebrews were saved, delivered and redeemed “At Passover.” Jesus is Our ‘Passover Lamb’ so the date coincided (see Exodus 12; 1 Corinthians 5:7).

But the Corinthians were treating it lightly – as an incidental add-on to their other common entertainment activities. So Paul went on to say, “A man (or woman) ought to examine himself before he eats the Bread and drinks the Cup. For anyone who eats and drinks without recognising the Body of the Lord eats and drinks Judgement on himself” (28-29).

It is a holy moment. That is why it is a Sacrament – a sacred event. Yes, Jesus did it in a home. Yes, we should do it in our homes too, but we should always remember that it is a Holy moment.

It represents the Death of Christ – until He comes – in all His Majestic Glory. (See also Luke 22:14-16; Revelation 5; Revelation 21:22-22:5.)
