Matthew 21:10-11
“When Jesus entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred and asked, ‘Who is this?’ The crowds answered, ‘This is Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth in Galilee.’”
How Matthew records Palm Sunday.
He reminds us of the prophecy we read in Zechariah, “See, your KING comes to you… riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey” (Zechariah 9:9). Yes, we were there for that too, in 1990. The Palm Sunday procession into Jerusalem, when pilgrims from all over the world join together and walk from Bethphage to the Garden of Gethsemane. It was a very emotional experience.
However, what struck me the most was that there we were in solemn procession, thronging down through the narrow streets, when first a young Arab drove his flock of sheep up through the middle of us, all the time moaning at us for being ‘in his way’, and then a taxi tried coming up against us as well. Both were going in the opposite direction.
There were the usual car-boot salesmen too, trying to sell orange juice, T-shirts and olive wood manger scenes and knick-knacks. I thought – don’t they know what’s going on? Don’t they care? But as I contemplated the scene, I felt the Lord whisper to me that it was no different for Jesus. What is more, most just carried on ‘business as usual’.
I love what Luke records: “Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Jesus, ‘Teacher, rebuke your disciples!’” (For shouting out “Blessed is the King who comes in the Name of the Lord.”) “I tell you,” He replied, “if they keep quiet, the stones will cry out!” (Luke 19:39-40) Yes. (You choose. Which do you want – Disciples or stones?)
Let me close by quoting the tremendous but almost forgotten old hymn.
Ride on! Ride on in majesty!
Hark! All the tribes “Hosanna!” cry;
O Saviour meek, pursue Thy road,
With palms and scattered garments strewed.
Ride on! Ride on in majesty!
In lowly pomp ride on to die:
O Christ, Thy triumphs now begin,
O’er captive death and conquered sin.
Ride on! Ride on in majesty!
The angel armies of the sky
Look down with sad and wondering eyes;
To see the approaching Sacrifice.
Ride on! Ride on in majesty!
Thy last and fiercest strife is nigh:
The Father on His sapphire throne
Awaits His Own Anointed Son!
Ride on! Ride on in majesty!
In lowly pomp ride on to die:
Bow Thy meek head to mortal pain,
Then take, O God, Thy power and reign!
Terrific hymn, isn’t it? What a pity it has almost been relegated to history.
Listen. Yes, He had to ride into Jerusalem. Yes, He had to die. But more – He is The King.
He is The King and as the last verse says, He took His power and reigns.
Never ever forget that. Nor that … He will return once more, but then in – “Power and great glory” (Matthew 24:30).
