Psalm 96:9

Worship the Lord in the splendour of His holiness, tremble before Him all the earth.

Yet another memorable Psalm we should all try to memorise in its entirety.

It is a joy to recognise how the Psalms of the 90’s have been the inspiration of so many of our hymns and choruses. As you read Psalms 90-100, you may well burst into singing as those songs come into your mind.

I love Psalm 96 – there is so much to get out of it. It begins with a new song. I believe that is a challenge for all of us. To make up our own praise song to God. If we adore Him, why should it be so difficult? Yes, it is great to use the words of others, but I believe it would delight Father’s heart and that of our Saviour if we used our own thoughts and words to thank Him, honour Him, praise Him and worship Him.

The next section encourages and challenges us to “proclaim His salvation” and to “declare His glory among the nations.” It’s a ‘Ring of Truth’! All that God has done for us is not just for our benefit – we are to share the ‘Good News’ with others, and tell them of all the good things He has done for us. (See also Luke 8:26-39 & John 4:28-42.) We can boast about our God – because He is great. He is not a mere man, or figment of our imagination, but the One True Reality who loves us so much He sent Jesus to die for us (and the rest of the world).

Verses 7-9 give us more reasons and words for worship and remind us once again Who our God is. He is far above all. We can approach Him only through sacrifice – we cannot come near in our own strength or righteousness. But we can come – because of The Sacrifice. For those in the days of the Old Testament, it was a temporary access through the blood of bulls, sheep and goats – but for us, it is the permanent access through the precious blood of Jesus, who was like a sheep without spot or blemish.

Yes, it is free for us – but it cost God separation from, and the life of His One and Only Son who was His constant delight.

God is far too holy to be able to look at sin and do nothing. Wickedness cannot enter His Presence – neither can deceit, arrogance, self-righteousness, or hypocrisy. We need to give ourselves a spiritual check-up before we enter His Holy Presence. The only right we have to be there is through the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus.

Those of us who have been saved for many years must never presume the conditions have changed. In our own right, we are still unworthy to come.

The Psalm ends with one of David’s Quiet Times!

“Let the heavens rejoice, let the earth be glad;
Let the sea resound, and all that is in it;
Let the fields be jubilant, and everything in them.
Then all the trees of the forest will sing for joy;
They will sing before the Lord,
For He comes, He comes to judge the earth.”

(v 11-13)

Yes, there are times for silence but there are also times for phenomenal parties.

Come, let’s join in one today.

For Jesus is well worth it. (Isn’t He?)
