Psalm 103:12

As far as the east is removed from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us.

After Psalm 23, this is probably one of the best-loved Psalms of all and this verse gives us a glimpse as to the reason why.

This Psalm should also be memorised because it reveals our Father’s heart and shows that beyond all doubt – He is a good God. As I have intimated before, David had an amazing ability to not only help us understand more about God, but also to reach down into our deepest emotions and express thoughts and feelings in a way we find totally beyond us.

This one is also amazing in that it appears to stem from a conversation he was having with himself (his soul). He begins, “Praise the Lord, O my soul; all my inmost being, praise His Holy Name” (v 1). It’s almost as if his spirit wants to praise but his soul doesn’t. How often we are like that. We want to praise the Lord but we don’t ‘feel’ like it. David gives us the antidote.

Tell your soul to do it – then explain why – “forget not all His benefits” (v 2). How easily we forget. How soon we take things for granted.

“Who forgives all your sins” (v 3). Can we ever ‘get over’ that? We shouldn’t, but we do. We should never ever forget the wonder of our salvation. We should never belittle the abhorrence God has for sin. We should never devalue the Cross of Christ.

“And heals all your diseases” (v 3). Not some, all. Whether we are healed naturally, through remedies and drugs, through surgery or a miracle – God is still the Healer – He alone is the Healer – never forget it.

“Who redeems your life from the pit.” He alone stooped down, paid the price and brought us up out of the pit of wretchedness, loneliness, victimisation and despair.

“And crowns you with love and compassion” (v 4). He not only redeems, He gives life and victory. Not as we deserve but according to His grace. He doesn’t wait for us to become good before He saves us. He saves us and then helps us to become good.

His love is beyond measure – higher than the heavens (see v 12). He doesn’t forgive our sins and then hang them over us as a warning or source of guilt. He takes them away. He removes them further than the eye can see, or bodies can travel. They are gone. And because He knows we are human and prone to make mistakes, He is prepared to do it all over again, whenever we ask Him.

Even though man is frail and God infinite, His love and righteousness will never fail us, our children, or anyone else we tell.

Yes, there is good reason to praise the Lord. All of Heaven and Earth can join in.

So too can you, O my soul. Come on – Let’s Praise the Lord.
