2 Corinthians 1:20
“For no matter how many promises God has made, they are ‘Yes’ in Christ. And so through Him the ‘Amen’ is spoken by us to the glory of God.”
All of them for me? Yes.
I haven’t sat down and counted them all (although I have gone through my Bible, read and underlined them). But we are told there are some 3,000 promises. Isn’t God good? That’s nearly 10 for every day – one for each working hour.
The promises were usually given at or for specific times to specific people or nations for specific reasons. All of them came true during their time. As Joshua said, “You know with all your heart and soul that not one of all the good promises the Lord your God gave you has failed. Every promise has been fulfilled; not one has failed” (Joshua 23:14). It’s a ‘Ring of Truth’!
But the extraordinary thing is that all the promises are ours too, through Christ Jesus. So, for example, when God said to Jacob, “I AM with you and will watch over you wherever you go” (Genesis 28:15), He says it to you and me. When God said to Joshua, “Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the Law My servant Moses gave you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, that you may be successful wherever you go.”… “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go” (Joshua 1:7 & 9), He says it to you and me as well.
When God said to Jeremiah, “I AM the Lord, the God of all mankind. Is anything too hard for Me?” (32:27), He says it to you and me. When He says, “I have loved you with an everlasting love; I have drawn you with loving-kindness” (Jeremiah 31:3), He says it to you and me.
When Jesus said, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink. Whoever believes in Me as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him” (John 7:37-38), He promised it to us as well as to His hearers in Jerusalem.
He promised to give His Holy Spirit and He does (see Luke 11:9-13). Every promise of God is “Yes” and “Amen” in Christ.
He also says to you today, “Peace I leave with you; My peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid” (John 14:27).
Why is that? Because Jesus fulfilled all the Law required. Many of the blessings and promises were conditional upon obedience but we find that too difficult, and so lose out. Jesus, however, was perfect and obedient and so ‘released’ to us all the promises, which had been ‘locked’ away.
Those of us who put our faith and trust in Christ Jesus are ‘born’ into the family of God and thus become ‘heirs’ of the promises. So, all the promises which God gave found their power and release in Christ, and through our relationship with Him, they become “Yes” and “Amen” to us as well.
Let that bring a smile to your face, and joy and renewed hope into your life right now.
Now claim a few of those promises for yourself today and then go and live in the fact that they are both true and yours.
Oh, and by the way, you can claim those same promises tomorrow (+ a few more, if you want to). There are lots and lots of them; they don’t run out or have a ‘use-by’ date.
What a wonderful Saviour and Heavenly Father we have, don’t we?
He also promised that He is coming back and He will (see John 14:3; Acts 1:11 & Revelation 22:12).
