1 John 1:8-10

“If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. If we claim we have not sinned, we make Him out to be a liar and His Word has no place in our lives.”

Truth in a nutshell. (Commit to memory these verses.)

This is the ‘Ring of Truth’ seen from Genesis to Revelation. We have sinned. God is righteous and can’t allow sin into His Presence. But He has also provided the way back into a relationship with Him (through the Baby of Bethlehem born to us that first Christmas).

Firstly, we have to be humble enough to admit we are sinful. That is a state rather than an action. We also commit sins. We may not like to admit it but we all think wrong thoughts, do wrong things and fall short of our own values, goals, dreams and expectations, let alone those of a holy, righteous God.

We all struggle with what we call a conscience. Yes, it can be manipulated; yes, it can be incorrectly programmed, but it does nevertheless remind us of when it thinks we have done wrong. It also nags at us, reminding us that we are not god; this existence is not the be all and end all of life, and that somewhere out there, there must be a power greater than man, which keeps everything in balance.

It keeps reminding us through simple logic that neither this world nor our human existence occurs by chance or even a ‘chance explosion’. There is too much order and consistency for there not to be an Almighty Hand at work. Night follows day consistently. Springtime follows winter, summer follows spring and autumn follows summer. Harvest follows seedtime (see Genesis 8:22). The tides rise and fall to a consistent pattern. Snowflakes are all different. God must exist.

The only reason we have to want to deny it is so that we are not accountable for our actions. But the Truth expels the illusion.

However, there is Good News. It’s the best possible News. And it is truth. “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9).

Why must we confess? So God gets an ego boost? Certainly not. It is so God can deal with it. He cannot deal with unconfessed or covered up sins and they are the things that trap us and keep us bound. Once sin is ‘out in the open’ (confessed), it loses its power. Guilt can be dealt with and freedom obtained.

God longs for you and me to live in freedom continuously. He has prepared the way – through the death of Jesus. All we have to do is “confess our sins”, accept His substitutionary death and be purified.

Is there something in the way of freedom and peace in your life? Is there something for which you need forgiveness? Then confess it now.

Your confession will bring forgiveness, peace, release, refreshment, relaxation, excitement, hope and joy.

Why delay it any longer?
