1 John 3:1-3
“How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know Him. Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when He appears, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is. Everyone who has this hope in Him purifies himself, just as He is pure.”
Have you experienced it yet?
It is the hallmark of God – it is the ‘Ring of Truth’! “God is love” (1 John 4:16). We can only ever know the Father through His Son, Jesus. Throughout the world many people believe in God but they don’t know Him as Father. They see Him as some menacing, legalistic, unfeeling God ready to strike out at the least provocation. Why? Because that is how Satan sees Him and he has blinded their eyes (see 2 Corinthians 4:4) and convinced them of the lie. As James says, “Even the demons believe that – and shudder” (James 2:19).
But Father is a good God. He is the One who created us in the first place to enjoy an intimate, eternal, open and loving relationship with Himself. He is the One who devised the Plan of Salvation, to win and bring us back although we had turned our backs on Him. It cost Him His One and Only Son. But once we are bought back and redeemed – He lavishes His love and grace upon us so that we “become Children of God” (John 1:12), not later but now. Yes, we are a Prince or Princess of “the King Eternal, Immortal, Invisible – the Only [wise] God” (1 Timothy 1:17), who is the Supreme Majesty, now.
Worldly people cannot handle that. It is too immense. Because they are neither a part of it nor desire to be so, they ridicule it and claim it is impossible, or just plain arrogant bigotry. But it is not that they reject us so much as they have rejected God, who offers them exactly the same position, which in their rebellion they refuse to acknowledge or pursue.
However, what God has done for us; what is yet in store for those who love and serve Him in total obedience is beyond our most vivid imagination or wildest dreams (see 1 Corinthians 2:9). We don’t know, says John. We can only speculate.
But we do know this. When He comes back – “we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is.” The disciples saw Him as a Man, transfigured and resurrected. Both incredible sights.
But then, we shall all “see Him as He is.” Not as a ‘helpless Baby’ but in resplendent Glory and blazing Majesty, with all His shining angels with Him. This makes earth’s richest pomp and ceremony worthless and insignificant and all of Hollywood’s best illusions pathetic.
When Reality comes to earth, “every knee [shall] bow… and every tongue confess that ‘Jesus Christ is Lord’” (Philippians 2:10). When He comes, those who pierced Him will wail (see John 19:37 & Zechariah 12:10), those who rejected Him will try and hide, and those who disbelieved will bury their heads in shame, in open and complete embarrassment.
Those who loved Him and served Him to the end will be changed to “be like Him”. That is God’s plan – to have many, many more ‘sons’ like Jesus who is the total delight of His heart. (See also Ephesians 1:4-5; Hebrews 2:10-11; Romans 8:29-30.)
Are you one, too?
Yes, we celebrate His incarnation at Christmas – but this is the ultimate prize and pinnacle of God’s desire – that we should “be like Him” and with Him forever.
Worth being and keeping “pure” for, isn’t it?
