1 Chronicles 1:28
“The Sons of Abraham: Isaac and Ishmael.”
In the next verse we read the names of Hagar’s descendants. Ishmael had 12 sons just as Jacob had 12 sons.
I mention this because God is a good God and a God of grace, love and faithfulness. Abraham tried to bring God’s plan into fruition his way, through Hagar, and hence Ishmael was born - although God told him that Ishmael would not inherit Abraham’s special promises and the Covenant of God. Nevertheless, God blessed Ishmael with life, protection and also 12 sons.
Chronicles is a bit like Numbers. God’s census. As you read the lists, try and allow God to speak to you through them or you will miss some amazing truths and spiritual principles and facts.
Take for example - “Canaan was the father of Sidon his firstborn, and of the Hittites, Jebusites, Amorites, Girgashites, Hivites, Arkites, Sinites, Arvadites, Zemarites, and the Hamathites” (v 13 - 16). Remember God’s promise to His people that He would give them the Land of Canaan and they would remove the Hivites, Amorites, Hittites, Jebusites, etc? Well, that’s why it is called the land of Canaan. It was where the Canaanites were - the sons of Canaan.
Verses 11 and 12 tell us where the Philistines came from. By means of a sort of potted history, this chapter also helps remind us of where we’ve come from: From Adam to Esau (v 34).
It gives us historical continuity and reinforces some interesting facts, of which one is God is an everlasting Father. Through all the generations, God had cared for and protected those who loved Him and those who didn’t.
Also, it reminds us that our God is a God of the individual. He knows us all by our own names - He is a personal God. He was always prepared and pleased to be known as the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob through succeeding generations.
It also reveals that He is our all-knowing God.
This record is just a sample of all the things He knows. He knows your name, your parents’ names and all you do - and He still loves you.
What an awesome God He is.
Why not spend a few moments right now to tell Him and thank Him for who He is?
