Psalm 119:105
Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path.
Psalm 117 is the shortest of the Psalms and this one is the longest. Psalms 111-118 make up what is known as ‘the Hallel’ – a group of Psalms read together for a time of specific Praise and Worship.
Psalm 119 is unique in that every verse of each stanza begins with the same letter of the Hebrew Alphabet and each stanza of 8 verses represents a different letter of the Hebrew Alphabet. So, not only was it useful to learn as wisdom of God but it also taught the reader both the alphabet and the 8 times table of maths at the same time.
The main emphasis of the Psalm is the worth of the Word of God. It gives us wisdom and truth, life and health, peace and prosperity, freedom and victory. Those who forsake it, disobey it, or neglect it, suffer the consequences.
“Blessed are they whose ways are blameless, who walk according to the Law of the Lord” (v 1).
“How can a young man keep his way pure? By living according to Your Word” (v 9).
“Open my eyes that I may see wonderful things in Your law” (v 18).
(A good prayer to pray before any Bible Study.)
“My Soul is weary with sorrow; strengthen me according to Your Word” (v 28).
“Turn my heart toward Your statutes and not toward selfish gain” (v 36).
“I will walk about in freedom, for I have sought out Your precepts” (v 45).
“The arrogant mock me without restraint, but I do not turn from Your law” (v 51).
“Though the wicked bind me with ropes, I will not forget Your law” (v 61).
“The law from Your mouth is more precious to me than thousands of pieces of silver and gold” (v 72).
“May my heart be blameless toward Your decrees, that I may not be put to shame” (v 80).
“Preserve my life according to Your love, and I will obey the statutes of Your mouth” (v 88).
“Your Word, O Lord, is eternal; it stands firm as the heavens” (v 89).
(Or firmer… As Jesus said, “Heaven and earth will pass away, but My Words will never pass away” Matthew 24:35.)
“I have more insight than all my teachers, for I meditate on Your statutes” (v 99). Still true today.
“I hate double-minded men, but I love Your law” (v 113).
“It is time for You to act, O Lord; Your law is being broken” (v 126).
“Direct my footsteps according to Your Word; let no sin rule over me” (v 133).
“The statutes You have laid down are righteous; they are fully trustworthy” (v 138).
“I rise before dawn and cry for help; I have put my hope in Your Word” (v 147).
“All Your words are true; all Your righteous laws are eternal” (v 160).
“Seven times a day I praise You for Your righteous laws” (v 164).
“Let me live that I may praise You, and may Your laws sustain me” (v 175).
“Your Word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path” (v 105).
When we read these verses today, we need to remember that Jesus is the ‘Word of God’. So “Delight in the Law” means “Delight in Jesus.”
Do you delight in Him?
He is the One to guide you each step of your way and to light up the future destiny He has for you. Isn’t that fantastic?
Learn to delight both in the Word of God – the Bible AND the Word of God – Jesus – the Word who “became flesh and made His dwelling among us” (see John 1:14).
Remember – His way is perfect and is always the best for you.
