Micah 6:8
“He has showed you, O man, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.”
“Read My lips.”
How often people have come up to me and said, “I don’t know what God wants me to do.” Being the person I am, I usually reply, “Have you tried doing what He says?” They look blank and I refer them to this verse (plus a couple of others, like Isaiah 58:6-7 & James 1:27).
Now, I’m the first to say that everyone should find out what God wants them to do and do it – but while you wait, ‘bring in the Kingdom’ anyway. However, most of the people who asked me that question were waiting for ‘the BIG ONE.’ They wanted to be like the Reverend Dr Billy Graham and preach to millions or Dr Pastor David Yonggi Cho and lead the world’s largest church. They have yet to understand that we have to be proved to be faithful in the small things of life before God can entrust us with the larger things.
We seek glory and recognition; God seeks humility, obedience, servanthood and faithfulness. Not so popular, are they? It is interesting to read in Ezekiel that God tells us that the reasons for Sodom and Gomorrah’s destruction were not only immorality and sexual deviation, but also “[they] were arrogant, overfed and unconcerned; they did not help the poor and needy. They were haughty and did detestable things before Me. Therefore I did away with them as you have seen” (Ezekiel 16:49-50). Had they really cared for the poor, the rest would not have happened. You see, if you spend time and energy on those who are desperate, you won’t have time for self-indulgence and deviation.
Throughout Scripture we see that God expects integrity of heart and life, and that He is very concerned for the weak, the helpless, those suffering injustice, widows and orphans and the poor. It’s a ‘Ring of Truth’!
As I say to my enquirers – “Do those things first and then see what God leads you on to.” You see, most of us don’t want to get our hands dirty. We don’t want to get involved in other people’s problems because it usually takes time, often an incredible amount of time and energy for only a very few obvious results, and it completely disrupts my schedule and plans.
Funnily enough, it doesn’t actually seem to disrupt God’s schedule or His plans for us though. We prefer to spend so much of our time trying to reach the ‘nice’ people, only to find they are usually too busy and self-satisfied so we get nowhere. If we, like Mother Teresa and Jackie Pullinger, went to the poor and downcast – we would find as they did – an amazing response, and the floodgates of Heaven open in miraculous ways.
What does God really want you to do? Are you doing it?
What would it take for you to change things so that you would do it?
If you are doing it – remember this – keep focused on Jesus because the results and rewards are ‘out of this world’.
