Isaiah 44:6
“This is what the Lord says – Israel’s King and Redeemer, the Lord Almighty: I am the First and the Last; apart from Me there is no God.”
It’s a ‘Ring of Truth’!
What fabulous names. Eternal names.
“Israel’s King” – David – was a terrific king but only to the extent he gave a small glimpse of their true King – Jesus Christ. Yes, God is the King of Israel. Jesus was indeed the King of the Jews. (See also Mark 15:2.)
Yes, it is true – you are a king only to the degree to which people acknowledge your kingdom. But God is King anyway. He is still Israel’s King. That is why there is still an Israel. Many have been the attempts to drive them into the sea – but it will never ever happen because God is still Israel’s King.
“Israel’s Redeemer” – Yes, that is still one of God’s Names. He redeemed them from Egypt. He redeemed them from Assyria, from Babylon, from Rome, from Egypt, from North Africa, from Syria and Jordan and from Iran and Iraq. And He will redeem them from the P.L.O., from Russia, the North, the South, the East and the West. He, God, is still Israel’s Redeemer.
He is also their Redeemer from themselves, from their sin and rebellion. He has paid the price to be their Redeemer and He has paid the price to be our Redeemer as well. That was why Jesus came and we benefit only because the Jews do first. We are grafted into (them) the vine. (See also John 15 & Romans 11:17–21.)
God is still “the Lord Almighty” – God. He is totally impregnable, He is totally invincible. He cannot lose and He cannot fail.
As soon as you put your trust and faith in Him, you become part of the winning and finally victorious team. God’s power is limitless and it has not decreased over the centuries. He is still the same. He is still “the First and the Last” – the Alpha and the Omega. He is the first Word and He is the last Word. “Apart from Me (Him) there is NO GOD.”
Remember that. There is nowhere else to go. As Peter said, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You (alone) have the words of eternal life” (John 6:68). Yes, it may be tough being a Christian – but where do you go if you want to give up? There is no other god.
Isaiah then gives us one of the most clear and precise reasons for avoiding idols. Read verses 9–23; they are terrific. A carpenter grows a tree. He then cuts it down. With part he makes a fire and warms himself. Part he uses as fuel to cook his food. With part he chisels out the form of a god, which he then bows down to, and worships. Talk about stupid. What utter nonsense.
Apart from Me there is no God.
Jesus says to you today – “Do not be afraid, I am the First and the Last. I am the Living One; I was dead, and behold I am alive for ever and ever. And I hold the keys of death and Hades” (Revelation 1:17–18).
He hasn’t changed.
He cannot die again.
Is He your God? For there is no other.
