1 John 5:11-13
“And this is the testimony: God has given us Eternal Life, and this Life is in His Son. He who has the Son has Life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life. I write these things to you who believe in the Name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have Eternal Life.”
What more has God got to do to prove to you that Jesus is the One and Only Son of God?
That is really what John has been saying. If we don’t believe in Jesus, we effectively say, ‘God is a liar’ (see v 10). This is heavy stuff but if you think about it, it is a ‘Ring of Truth’!
You see, throughout Scripture from Genesis to Revelation, God has told the same story. God is good and perfect. He created us to have a close and eternal relationship with Him. We blew it and went our own rebellious and independent way. God made a way for us to come back to Him, for health, peace, forgiveness and freedom through sacrifice, which pointed forward to a divine Deliverer, a Messiah, and a Redeemer.
Joseph was a type (see Genesis 50:20); Moses was a type (see Exodus 3:7-10); the Passover Lamb was a type (see Exodus 12) and King David was a type (see Revelation 5:5). The Reality came in the Person of Jesus Christ. Totally man, totally God, totally unique. He lived among us, revealed God to us, died and redeemed us, and rose again just to prove His authenticity once more. He also promised to return.
God proved Jesus was His Son, by blood – the Virgin Birth and Holy Spirit conception; by water – His Baptism, with the voice of God and Spirit coming upon Him in the form of a dove and also by the Spirit – by the signs and wonders He performed (see 1 John 5:6-8).
Daniel prophesied the exact year of the beginning of His Ministry. God announced His birth with angels and a star (which we are celebrating right now) (see Luke 2 & Matthew 2). Jesus told people He was God and proved it by His life, death and resurrection. There is more verifiable evidence that the Bible is true and that Jesus died and rose again than anything else on earth. What more do you want God to do?
Since there is so much evidence:
1. We need to believe
2. We need to repent
3. We need to be obedient
4. We need to realise we “have Eternal Life”.
Yes, this is for now and later. Yes, we are going to see Jesus. Yes, we are going to be with Him. Yes, we are going to be changed so that we are sinless like Him. Yes, there is going to be a New Heaven and a New Earth and yes, we are going to have new resurrected bodies.
But Eternal Life starts now. It is as Paul said – The Holy Spirit gives us Eternal Life now as the Guarantee of the Glorious Future, which is ours (see Ephesians 1:13-14). But we can have Life in all its fullness now (see John 10:10). Eternal Life starts at conversion. We begin to taste the power of God through the Life of the indwelling Spirit of God immediately. The ‘New Life’ we receive when we are ‘Born Again’ is Eternal Life. That is it (see John 3:16).
If you have committed your life to Christ and you are ‘born again’ then yes, “you have Eternal Life” – so go and enjoy it today.
