Judges 1:19
The Lord was with the men of Judah. They took possession of the hill country, but they were unable to drive the people from the plains, because they had iron chariots. (Read also Joshua 17:17-18.)
That is the testimony of most Christians too.
What about you? They know they are saved from God’s wrath and Hell and look forward to being taken out of this evil world. But while they wait, they watch all the negatives on T.V., listen to all the crises in the world on the radio, read the newspapers for in-depth debate on those issues and live a life of difficulty and defeat.
They forget that Jesus paid the price to set them at liberty, He died to free them from sin and their past, He rose again to give them life in all its fullness by the power of His Holy Spirit living within them, and an eternal hope which is just a further dynamic dimension to the life they can enjoy now.
Eternal life does not start in Heaven and neither does the ‘Promised Land’. Eternal life begins at salvation; at the same time we enter the ‘Promised Land’. Furthermore, we have the Holy Spirit dwelling inside us who not only has almighty power to overcome every obstacle but also is Himself the guarantee of our hope of life in the New Heaven and New Earth (see Ephesians 1:13-14). It’s a ‘Ring of Truth’! What more could you possibly want on earth (or in Heaven)?
This verse starts with “the Lord was with (them).” They were totally assured of victory if they continued to trust and obey - to walk in obedience to the prompting of God. Was God adequate for the hill country? Of course He was. Was He adequate for the plains? Not according to the men of Judah. New technology had made God outdated. The people of the plains had iron chariots. But they were still people. God made the iron. God gave the imagination, ingenuity and inventiveness for them to create the iron chariots. That all came from God - so how come God became impotent in dealing with them? Answer - He didn’t.
The problem was that their ‘grasshopper mentality’ had returned. The 10 spies came back from the Promised Land saying that they felt like grasshoppers compared to their enemies. They had succumbed to the same mentality once more. How could they deal with iron chariots? That was not their problem - that was God’s. God had given them the Promised Land. Their job was to possess it. The same is true for you and me. The ‘Promised Land’ of joy, excitement, peace and fulfilment is all ours for the taking.
What are the iron chariots in your life?
Listen, science has not made God impotent, even if some scientists try to tell us it has. God is still bigger than men. Don’t ever forget it - Science is the discovery of what God has already done. God creates our brains, gives us our creativity, our ingenuity, our artistic flair, and mastery of the elements.
You are a child of the King of all kings. A prince or princess of the KING. Start living like one and begin to enjoy it. God can still deal with your chariots; real, perceived, iron, virtual or of the latest technology.
Hand yours over to Him today and walk in victory until they ‘bow’ before His Name and Glory.
Christ has set you free.
Now go and live in the freedom and victory, which He has already secured for you.
Begin to thank Him and praise Him for it now.
