Psalm 127:1
Unless the Lord builds the house, its builders labour in vain. Unless the Lord watches over the city, the watchmen stand guard in vain.
It’s check-up time with the benefit of Solomon’s wisdom.
He had seen with his own eyes how all his brothers went through real struggles as they tried to become king, not realising that they would never be able to do it in their own strength. We never read of Solomon’s push to become king. Indeed, if God’s prophet, Nathan, hadn’t got on to Bathsheba, his mother, he would never have become king at all. That was because Adonijah, another of his brothers, had already set himself up as king with the blessing of Joab, the Army Commander-in-Chief and Abiathar, the priest.
However, it was neither David’s nor God’s intention for Adonijah to be king, for God looks at the heart, not the outward appearance, however handsome it may be. Even with all of Adonijah’s best-laid plans, he came to nothing. The same end had befallen Absolom when he tried to become king earlier. He was Adonijah’s older brother. He started to win over the hearts of the people but missed on the heart of God.
It is a salutary lesson for us all. It is far safer to co-operate with God than work against Him. The first requirement is to love God. The second is to find out His will for your life and follow it and the third is to avoid all distractions and comparison with others.
I learnt very early on in ministry that the Lord’s anointing is on His will for my life, not on what I think it is or sometimes want it to be. Often I have seen areas of ‘need’ where I would love to have ‘got involved’ to sort things out but had a definite check in my spirit because that was not what God had called me to do.
Similarly, others would stress over my responsibilities when I didn’t. The difference was that I was anointed for them and that anointing gave me the authority to give all the pressures back to God. Those without the anointing don’t have that authority because they have taken responsibilities upon themselves without God’s intent or consent. Reader, please take note.
They planned the tower of Babel but the Lord brought it to ruin (see Genesis 11:1-9). The Lord has to be both architect and builder or the result of our plans will be like nothing more than a house built of cards. You can try and protect your city, ‘your wealth’, your security but it is in vain if it’s not submitted to God. Tonight, your soul might be called into His Presence (see Luke 12:15-21).
“In vain you rise early and stay up late, toiling for food to eat – for He grants sleep to those He loves” (v 2). Jesus said that we should not worry about what we will eat or drink… “But seek first His Kingdom and His righteousness and all these will be given to you as well” (Matthew 6:33).
Yes, check up today. Is God pilot or passenger in your life?
What do you think His answer would be?
Make sure He is the Lord and the builder of your life, marriage, family, ministry and business – or ALL of what you do will be in vain. It’s a ‘Ring of Truth’!
