Ezekiel 37:14
“ ‘I will put My Spirit in you and you will live, and I will settle you in your own land. Then you will know that I the Lord have spoken, and I have done it, declares the Lord.’ ”
The Valley of Dry Bones.
This chapter is probably the most famous chapter of Ezekiel and indeed probably one of the most well known chapters in the whole of the Old Testament.
It is the chapter of the vision of the valley of dry bones.
“The Spirit of the Lord... set me in the middle of a valley; it was full of bones. He led me back and forth among them, and I saw a great many bones on the floor of the valley, bones that were very dry. He asked me ‘Son of man, can these bones live?’...” “As I was prophesying there was a noise, a rattling sound, and the bones came together, bone to bone. I looked, and tendons and flesh appeared on them and skin covered them, but there was no breath in them...” “Come from the four winds, O breath, and breathe into these slain, that they may live.” “And breath entered them; they came to life and stood up on their feet – a vast army” (37:1-3; 7-10).
God specialises in the impossible. He excels in creating something out of nothing. He is a master of bringing back life to the dead.
Israel was as good as dead. Carried off into Babylon, and oblivion. Only a small important remnant was left. God had forsaken His treasured possession, His own nation. All hope was lost – they had reaped the true harvest of their rebellion and sin.
But all hope was not lost. God is a good God. He is faithful to the end. Out of total despair He brings victory.
Centuries were to pass, however, until the beginning of the fulfilment of the prophecy. It didn’t happen with the restoration of the Temple, it didn’t even happen when Jesus came to earth. Indeed in AD 70, Jerusalem was levelled to the ground under the Roman Commander, Titus. But it did happen.
It began in 1948 when the Protectorate of Palestine was set up. It was increased after the 6-Day War of 1967 and subsequently by the liberation of Jerusalem in 1973. It is still taking place in the third millennium AD.
God’s promises will always come to pass. Israel is a nation again.
Always keep an eye on the events involving Israel because they are a barometer of what is to come. No matter what her enemies may scheme, God will protect her.
However, she will never experience lasting peace until the Prince of Peace arrives and enters her. (The 7-year treaty of peace will be no more than a smokescreen – but it will be a sign that Jesus is coming back very soon.) Jesus will come again. Watch out, as it won’t be long now.
Listen. If you are feeling dry, lifeless or hopeless today, God can breathe the breath of life and hope into you and your situation, if you will let Him.
Why not ask Him to do so right now?
Then you will find that there is light at the end of the tunnel and it is nothing less than the Glory of God.
