Galatians 6:14-15
“May I never boast except in the Cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. Neither circumcision nor uncircumcision means anything; what counts is a new creation.”
“What counts is a new creation.” It’s a ‘Ring of Truth’!
This not only encapsulates the message of Galatians but the message of Paul and the message of the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ.
Why does Paul, why does the Gospel concentrate on the Cross? Because it was where Jesus died. It was where He paid the price required by the Righteous and Holy God for our sin. It is where we receive forgiveness. It is where we receive adoption as children of God; it is where we receive healing. It is where we receive wholeness. It is where we receive peace with God, where we receive hope, where we receive indescribable joy and where we begin to truly live.
It is also where we die. Jesus died on the Cross for us to empower us to come to the cross and die to our selfish behaviour, our sinful nature and our carnal, worldly ambitions and desires. It is the end of my authority and myself. It is the beginning of the resurrection life of Christ in me. It’s the beginning of Christ’s authority over me.
I can never get away from the Cross if I am to live; to live the ‘Eternal Life’ God intended me to live. It is the place I come to time and time again, yes even daily, to remember the extent of the love that God the Father and Christ the Son have for me. If as Paul says, “[God] did not spare His own Son but [freely] gave Him up for us all – how will He not also, along with Him, graciously give us all things?” (Romans 8:32)
The Cross is the centre of Christianity because it stands as an offence to the world and the gateway to God. If you love the Cross of Christ and boast about it, you will become unpopular with the world. You will be branded a fundamentalist bigot. You will be hated and become a target for those who are not only wicked but actively trying to get others drawn into their evil practices.
We have to make the choice. We choose either the Cross or the world – there is no middle ground. God doesn’t permit compromise because He is Holy, Holy, Holy – He is totally separate and unique.
When Paul says, “neither circumcision nor uncircumcision means anything” – he is referring to the outward sign of being a ‘child of Abraham’. Some Jews were very proud of their direct descent from Abraham and thus their ‘religious purity’ because of it. Paul’s point was that it isn’t the outward or human ancestry that is important.
What is crucial is new birth – being “a new creation”. We need to become one of the ‘faith children’ of Abraham. Children of the Promises of God – whether Jew or Gentile. Oh yes, even today, we can go through ‘all the motions’ to be ‘like’ a Christian, if it is fashionable, convenient or the ‘in thing’ but listen – “what counts is a new creation.” Turning over a new leaf is not good enough – We “must be ‘born again’” (John 3:7).
I must be crucified with Christ. That way I die and become “a new creation”.
I MUST acknowledge the total Lordship of Christ in every aspect of my life. I am no longer in control – He is. The world must not have any further hold over me. If I am crucified with Christ, I then have the resurrection power of God in my life.
Are you “a new creation”? Really? Do you LIVE as “a new creation”?
Tell me – do you “boast… in the Cross” or are you still embarrassed by it?
If you are “a new creation”, the Cross is your delight, your passion and your glory.
