Psalm 136:1
Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good. His love endures for ever.
This is a great Psalm for public reading and also for initiating praise and worship.
Each verse begins with an attribute of God or mentions something great He has done and ends with – “His love endures for ever.” The presenter or reader would recite or read the first line event and the congregation would respond with “His love endures for ever.”
Undoubtedly, this format has encouraged the use of liturgy over the centuries and whilst over time it has lost its impact and appeal, it has not lost its worth or significance. While today we are happy to sing songs and hymns together, we know less of the dynamic of reading Scripture together. It is often further hampered by the diversity of Bible translations that the congregation uses or brings to Church.
Nevertheless, it is good to read Scripture publicly and in unison. It brings unity and increases our Scriptural knowledge. So if you are involved in a church, Cell Group or other small group, can I encourage you read the Scriptures out loud together? (Don’t let the difference in translations stop you.) You will find it exhilarating.
Then I’d like to encourage you in your worship too. Read this Psalm together – let one read the ‘presenter’s’ piece and all join in the chorus – “His love endures for ever.”
Once your group has got used to the idea, can I encourage you to start composing your own. Get each member of your group to speak out a line and the rest to respond with “His love endures for ever.”
You can start with going through the names of God in Isaiah 9 – The Lord of Hosts; The Almighty God; The Everlasting Father; The Prince of Peace; etc. Then move on to events in Scripture that the group can remember: He healed the sick; gave sight to the blind; gave hearing to the deaf; fed the 5,000; raised the dead; died on the cross; paid the penalty for my sin; rose from the dead; and is coming again soon. Etc.
Then become more personal – get people to be specific as to what He has done for them since they have become Christians and then again, everyone else responds with, “His love endures for ever.”
It will revolutionise your group, their appreciation of God and their quality of worship. And yours too.
To make a start, do it on your own.
And remember – no matter what you do or whatever happens in your life – His Love Endures Forever.
