Psalm 2:6
I have installed My King on Zion, My Holy Hill.
I love this Psalm because it puts everything in proper perspective.
When ridicule and the apparent triumph of evil surround us, it is good to come back and read this Psalm. Indeed, it is even better to know it off by heart. Can I encourage you to memorise it?
It starts - “Why do the nations conspire and the peoples plot in vain? The kings of the earth take their stand and the rulers gather together against the Lord and against His Anointed One. ‘Let us break their chains’ they say ‘and throw off their fetters.’”
I find it incredible because that is exactly what people are saying today. Talk about God, and to most people, He is no more than a selfish, law-imposing person who has made His rules just to make their lives miserable; to take all the joy and fun out of living.
“Give us the freedom to live as we desire and believe what we like. Why must we believe in just one God? Why does He have to be so boring, irrelevant, restrictive and exclusive? Why can’t He lighten up? We will not have this Man to reign over us.”
Yes, the Psalmist has correctly discerned that their anger is not really directed at us but at Jesus. We need to remember this. Their frustration and anger are directed at the Anointed One, ‘Jesus’, whom we seek to serve and to follow. But we should also ask the question - Why?
As a church we are currently studying a series on the 10 Commandments and seeking to prove that, rather than being just a list of ‘do’s and don’ts’, the Commandments are a freedom formula for life, producing contentment, security, peace, and healthy lifelong relationships.
The enemy, Satan, has done a good PR job. There is no logic in throwing away God’s handbook to life when all that does is give us heartache, delusion, mistrust, and broken relationships. It is totally illogical and yet so many people are doing it - even some who call themselves Christians.
Listen, “The One enthroned in Heaven laughs” (v 4). All their evil schemes, always but always, rebound on themselves. They are the ones who lose out. God is immune to their puny ideas and plans.
But, He proclaims, “I have installed My King on Zion, My Holy Hill.” In other words, “No matter what you do, I have made Jesus, King of the Universe.”
He decrees the Incarnation. “You are My Son; today I have become your Father” (v 7). He then promises Jesus the nations and the whole earth as His possession.
The spotlight turns as it always does. Jesus stood before Pilate but in reality Pilate stood before Jesus (see Matthew 27:11-16). Be wise. “Kiss the Son, lest He be angry and you be destroyed in your way” (v 12). Yes, they may plan temporary blasphemy but that reaps eternal destruction.
The Psalmist ends - Be encouraged - when everything seems to be going against you - listen, for “Blessed are all who take refuge in Him” (v 12).
Jesus Christ is LORD.
Yes, God has already installed His King.
Rejoice, for one day it will be revealed. When He comes again. Then ALL the world will know.
No matter who or what you are facing today, look up - JESUS CHRIST IS LORD.
