Exodus 12:13
“The blood will be a sign for you on the houses where you are; and when I see the blood, I will pass over you.”
The final plague was fatal.
It meant the death of every first-born son throughout the whole of Egypt, including Goshen and all the animals of the Egyptians. God’s sentence was passed – all that was left was for it to be carried out. But God was going to save the Hebrews. It would, however, depend upon their obedience to the ‘way’ God was going to do it.
God gave very specific instructions, which if carried out would provide salvation to the people – if they ignored them or didn’t carry them out correctly, they would be treated just like the Egyptians. The salvation was free but they had to appropriate it for themselves – they had to make it their own. Interesting, isn’t it? Our salvation is exactly the same. It’s ‘free’ to all but we have to make it ours. It’s a ‘Ring of Truth’!
That is not where the similarities end, either. They had to take a lamb without defect. They couldn’t use any old lamb. There was only one way – one spotless lamb. So for us – there is no other way – there is only One Way, One Lamb. The Spotless Lamb of God without defect, without sin – we call Him Jesus (see John 1:29).
Verse 46 reads, “do not break any of the bones.” That is why no bones of Jesus were broken. When the soldiers came to do so, as they took Jesus’ body down from the Cross, they found that Jesus was already dead so they did not need to break His bones (John 19:33).
The Israelites had to take some of the blood and sprinkle it on the top and sides of the doorframes – the inference is total cover. The Angel of Death would come to each home in turn and look not just for blood, but also for it to be on the top and sides of the doorframe. Anyone in the field would be destroyed – for there was no cover or protection there. They had to be within the home and under the covering of the blood. So it is for us. Belief in Jesus as the Son of God is not enough. As James says – even the demons believe and tremble (James 2:19). We must be “covered by the Blood of the Lamb.”
The writer to the Hebrews reminds us, “without the shedding of Blood there is NO forgiveness” (Hebrews 9:22). As John says, “The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world” (John 1:29). And Paul says, “The Saviour of all men, and especially of those who believe” (1 Timothy 4:10). Jesus died so that every single person who lives on this planet can be saved. The price has been paid – but it is only any good if and when I make it mine. When Paul says, “especially of those who believe”, that is exactly what he is getting at.
We must be covered by the Blood. We must acknowledge our sin, repent – choose to change our ways – ask for His forgiveness and cleansing in His Blood and for His Power to receive Eternal Life. There is no other way. Because God has promised, “when I see the Blood, I will pass over YOU.”
That is why Jesus is often referred to as our ‘Passover’ Lamb. Just as for the Israelites in Egypt, so for us. We are all ‘condemned to death’ but God has provided a way; His Way of escape.
It was fully effective in Egypt. It will be for us too.
That is why Jesus said,
“I AM the Way, and the Truth and the Life. No one comes to the Father except through Me” (John 14:6).
