Isaiah 56:6–7

“And foreigners who bind themselves to the Lord to serve Him, to love the Name of the Lord, and to worship Him, all who keep the Sabbath without desecrating it and who hold fast to My covenant – these I will bring to My Holy Mountain and give them joy in My House of Prayer. Their burnt offerings and sacrifices will be accepted on My altar; for My House will be called a House of Prayer for all nations.”

Been there, done that.

God is the universal God. Christianity is the universal ‘religion’. That is why it is both unique and ‘exclusive’. If the Creator God is available to all, why mess around with other gods and religions?

I’ll tell you why – because God makes demands. Yes, Christianity is free to all but there is a price to be paid. That price is yielding up control of your life to the One who gave it to you. Giving up your puny desires to accept the Will of God. Submitting your agenda to His agenda.

This verse shows us that God has always been interested in ‘all the world’, not just His treasured possession, the Jews. This is not to say that He had or has given up on the Jews – God forbid – He definitely hasn’t. (And He won’t.) But whilst He has chosen the Jews as His special possession, He has always left room for others if they were prepared to come to Him on His terms. Those who do come enjoy all the blessings equally available to the Jews. The sad thing today is that so many of us are enjoying what the Jews are not experiencing because of their rejection of their true Messiah, Jesus, Yeshua.

But God hasn’t changed. (It’s a ‘Ring of Truth’!) He said to Abraham – “all peoples on earth will be blessed through you” (Genesis 12:3). God has always been and always will be the Universal, all-inclusive God. The choice is for us to either accept His love and grace, forgiveness and blessings or reject them. If we do accept them, the onus is then upon us to stay true to Him and Him alone. To bind ourselves to Him. “No one can serve two masters,” said Jesus. “You cannot serve both God and money” (Matthew 6:24). You cannot be ‘of the world’ and ‘in Christ’. There has to be a separation.

One of the happiest and most awesome experiences I have had the privilege of enjoying occurred in 1990. As a family we visited Israel during Passover. On Palm Sunday, we joined with pilgrims from all over the world on their annual walk down the road to the Garden of Gethsemane. Later, we went across the Kidron Valley and up into the City of Jerusalem.

The walk itself concluded and culminated at the ‘Church for all Nations’ in the Garden of Gethsemane. So there in that ‘Church for all Nations’ were pilgrims of all nations worshipping the One True God. It truly became “My House of Prayer” on “My Holy Mountain.” The Spirit-led worship was totally something else.

What a joy we experienced, particularly as Gentiles, to join with others from many continents in praising the Name of the Lord in ‘His Land’.

In many respects this verse was fulfilled uniquely then.

But there is a time coming when it shall be fulfilled again, to an even greater degree.
