Exodus 25:8
“Then have them make a sanctuary for Me, and I will dwell among them.”
It’s a ‘Ring of Truth’!
Here, Moses was called to go up Mount Sinai for 40 days and 40 nights.
God told Moses to leave Aaron and Hur in charge until he returned. They had held his hands up whilst Joshua was fighting and defeating the Amalekites in the valley below (Chapter 17:12). This is a very special meeting for Moses. No one else is to come with him although we read in Chapter 32:17 that Joshua was there somewhere. (It also proves that Joshua had nothing to do with the ‘golden-calf-rebellion’.)
Over the next 7 chapters the Lord reveals His plan for the Tabernacle, the Priesthood and items within the Tabernacle. It’s a set of chapters which is regrettably often ignored and overlooked. It all seems so complicated and unnecessary, particularly in our modern ‘low church’, non-traditional, Pentecostal and evangelical church worship style. We have almost become so proud of our simplicity that if we are not careful, it allows the holy to become commonplace or profane.
Yet has God changed? We reply with an emphatic “No” because we rest on and trust in the unchanging character of God. And yet at the same time we seem to want to do away with, or just plain ignore so much of the Old Testament. But even Jesus said that He didn’t come to do away with it – but rather to fulfil it (Matthew 5:17). May I encourage you to re-read these 7 chapters slowly and allow God to speak to you through them again and reveal precious insights into His beloved Son, Jesus, through the pictures and symbols?
For today I want to remind you of the heart of God. He yearns to have a relationship with each one of us, with you. A permanent, intimate relationship of love and purity, holiness and righteousness, and yet He knows that we cannot because of our sin and rebellion. No matter how hard we try, none of us is capable of sustaining that relationship. That doesn’t stop God trying, and here we see a glimpse of His eternal plan to establish an eternal relationship. He came down in the cool of the day in the Garden of Eden and here wanted to establish His Presence with them in their wilderness journeys, more intimately than in the symbols of the fire and cloud.
Notice He starts by inviting the people to contribute to the building process. It is a timely reminder to us all. When the church takes up the ‘offering/collection’, it is not to ‘get money’. Yes, that is the result but that is not solely God’s intent. It is rather that we can feel and be a part of God’s plans on earth. It’s a form of worship. It enables us to show physically our gratitude and love for God and our desire to see the extension of His Kingdom on earth. And yet, how often do we give grudgingly.
God has given us all we have, just as He arranged for the Egyptians to give to the Israelites all they had. They were now able to give back to God from what He had entrusted to them. It’s the same for us today.
Moses gave an order – “So the people were restrained from bringing more, because what they already had [given] was more than enough to do all the work” (Exodus 36:6–7).
Oh, that that might be said of each of us, too.
What will you give Him? And keep giving Him?
What are you doing to maintain your relationship with God?
