Zephaniah 1:18
“Neither their silver nor their gold will be able to save them on the day of the Lord’s wrath. In the fire of His jealousy the world will be consumed, for He will make a sudden end of all who live in the earth.”
It’s actually a ‘Ring of Truth’!
Zephaniah prophesied during the reign of Josiah. Josiah was just a lad of eight when he became king and he reigned 31 years (see 2 Kings 22 & 23). He was good and turned the people back to God. He removed the altars to the foreign gods that Solomon had erected and renewed the Covenant. He also got the people to observe the Feast of Passover for the first time since the time of the Judges. He also rid the nation of mediums and spiritists.
“Neither before nor after Josiah was there a king like him who turned to the Lord as he did – with all his heart and with all his soul and with all his strength, in accordance with all the Law of Moses.”
Nevertheless, the Lord did not turn away from the heat of His fierce anger, which burned against Judah because of all that Manasseh had done to provoke Him to anger. So the Lord said, ‘I will remove Judah also from My Presence as I removed Israel, and I will reject Jerusalem, the City I chose, and this Temple, about which I said ‘There shall my Name be’” (2 Kings 23:25-27).
We need to read that to understand Zephaniah. Otherwise we see him prophesying ‘doom and gloom’ in a reign of righteousness. Unfortunately, there are some today who believe they are ‘prophets’ and go down the road of criticism and rebuke and ‘prophecy against’ those whose hearts are seeking the Lord. Here they are, trying to follow Him to the best of their ability, and all the ‘prophecy’ does is put them under condemnation, which is always from the enemy and never from God.
As Paul tells us, “Everyone who prophesies speaks to men for their strengthening, encouragement and comfort” (1 Corinthians 14:3) and thus edifies the church. Prophecy is to ‘forth tell’ the Word of God.
Why is it different today? Because as the writer to the Hebrews says, “In the past God spoke to our forefathers through the prophets … but in these last days He has spoken to US BY HIS SON” (Hebrews1:1-2). And by implication, through the Holy Spirit who lives within every Christian.
In verses 4-6, Zephaniah makes a very challenging statement.
The Lord says, “I will stretch out My hand against… I will cut off…” (v 4).
“Those who bow down on the roofs to worship the starry host, those who bow down and swear by the Lord AND who also swear by Molech, those who turn back from following the Lord and neither seek the Lord nor inquire of Him” (v 5).
We cannot get away with being chameleons - changing colour to suit our environment or surroundings. We cannot ‘run with the hare and hunt with the hounds’. We cannot ‘have our cake and eat it too’.
We must not compromise.
Here, God says He will cut us off. Finally He says He will “spit you out of My mouth” (Revelation 3:16). All the silver and gold in the world will not protect us from the Day of God’s wrath. He is coming again – with fire this time (see 2 Peter 3:7-10).
He calls us – He calls to you and me today.
Separate yourself out to God now before it’s too late.
The Day is near – will you be ready or will you be found to have compromised?
I beg you - Be totally “Sold Out For Jesus” and Him alone.
