Jeremiah 5:12
They have lied about the Lord; they said, “He will do nothing! No harm will come to us; we will never see sword or famine.”
Misrepresentation of God.
It is rampant in the so-called ‘Christian’ Western World today. The people have forsaken the God of their fathers and made themselves god in His place. The law, which is impersonal, has been personalised into the lives of human judges. Consequently, the accused then compares himself with the life of the judge, rather than the law. Who is he to judge me? They forget that the law is what they are being judged by and our laws originally came from the Judge of the living and the dead.
The result of all this is that I become the judge and whatever I think is what matters. This leads to the problems we have today. Where men and women interpret Scripture from their own paradigm, if the two don’t match, instead of submitting to Scripture, they discount it. They conceptualise, rationalise or subject it to the local culture, so it becomes irrelevant. If it doesn’t stack up against their view of what their god is like, Scripture must yield to their understanding.
If God is a God of love, then –
“We must all be saved and there can't be a Hell.
It doesn’t matter what we do now because we will all go to Heaven in the end. We might blow it on earth but ‘she’ll be right’.
We’ll all be changed into good people before we reach Heaven, so don’t worry.
Don’t put extra burdens upon me now, I’ve got enough struggles, thank you, and I really want to enjoy myself. Doesn’t God want me to be happy?
God doesn’t punish people. Sure, He doesn’t like it when we do wrong, but He’s big enough not to worry about it – He doesn’t need an ego boost.”
Subtle, isn’t it? Plausible even. But they know neither the Scriptures nor the fear of the Lord. They don’t know God. Yes, they all want to go to the Biblical Heaven, but go their own way. The problem is that you can get to the Biblical Heaven only the Biblical way.
God doesn’t overlook sin. He deals with it through Jesus’ death. There is also a thing called ‘God’s Wrath’ and that will be poured out upon all sin (& sinners). Only those ‘covered by the Blood of Jesus’ will escape. And yes, there is a Hell. And it is eternal and absolutely horrendous, fearsome, devastating and disastrous. And those who don’t accept Jesus Christ as their Lord and Saviour will end up there, whether they like it or not. “Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. The one who sows to please their sinful nature, from that nature will reap destruction” (Galatians 6:7-8). It’s a ‘Ring of Truth’!
God hasn’t changed. He hasn’t become an impotent Father Christmas, or obedient genie. He is Holy, Holy, Holy and punishes sin and destroys evil – And that is the ‘Good News’.
Do you remember Abram pleading for Sodom and Gomorrah? Would God save the city for 10 righteous persons? They weren’t found, were they? (See Genesis 18 & 19.)
We read, “If you can find but ONE person who deals honestly and seeks the truth, I will forgive this city (Jerusalem)” (Jeremiah 5:1).
O dear!
The challenge for us, today, is to get back to the truth of Scripture and use that as our anchor, map and benchmark – then we will be able to recognise and avoid the counterfeit.
What are you basing your life on?
The counterfeit, wishful thinking, or the Truth of God?
