John 20:30-31
“Jesus did many other miraculous signs in the presence of His disciples, which are not recorded in this book. But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in His Name.”
No, not in a corner.
Jesus walked around on earth for 6 weeks after His resurrection and before His ascension. There was ample evidence that He was alive. At the very end of his Gospel, John writes, “Jesus did many other things as well. If every one of them were written down, I suppose that even the whole world would not have room for the books that would be written” (John 21:25).
John wrote what he did with a purpose. He started the way he meant to carry on and we find that when he recorded the miracles, it was with the express purpose that they should be seen for what they were – signs. Signs – that Jesus Christ was and is God.
In one sense John was not so much worried about what the miracles were or who benefited by them because his view is that we would all benefit by them. They are indisputable signs that Jesus was and is the Son of God. Jesus said in effect – if you don’t want to believe My Word that I Am God, then believe because of the signs that prove it (see John 10:38).
That is one reason why so many set out to disprove the miracles. If you can do that, Jesus is not who He claimed to be, He is not God. The only problem is that even for us in our highly sophisticated world, they are still miracles which cannot be intelligently explained away. Those who try discredit their own integrity.
John was touched not only by Jesus, but also by His Father’s heartbeat. His is a biased Gospel. It is not just a record of events or words or actions. It is a presentation of truth designed specifically to enable us to ‘see and understand’ that Jesus is none other than the true ‘Son’ of the living God, the promised Messiah – the Christ.
He keeps reminding us that he was an eyewitness who recorded the truth. No wonder the enemy has done all he can to discredit John’s Gospel even more than all the rest – because it is dynamite. Discredit John’s Gospel and Christianity loses some of its integrity. Unfortunately for the enemy, it cannot be discredited because whenever it is exposed, it reveals truth – convincing and convicting truth.
What a joy and privilege for you and me to have such a book today. Not only for our own encouragement but for sharing with others who, if they read it with an open mind, will find the truth that “the Word became flesh” in Jesus (John 1:14), dwelt for a while among us, was crucified, died and rose again. Jesus is None Other than the Great I AM (see John 8:48-59); “The Bread of Life” (John 6:35); “The Light of the World” (John 8:12); “The Resurrection and the Life” (John 11:25); “The Way, The Truth, and the Life” (John 14:6).
Jesus had within His close group of followers a betrayer, Judas, who was beyond reconciliation; Peter who denied Him, but who as John shows, was beautifully restored; and Thomas, the doubter. Jesus treated Thomas the same way as He treated Peter.
He won them round. Why? – Because He loved them and had great faith in them. He saw their potential and was determined to release them into its fullness. Peter became the foundation and pillar of the Church and Thomas gave (us) that tremendous exclamation when He eventually saw the resurrected Christ – “My Lord and My God!” (John 20:28)
Most of us deny Him at times; most of us fail, have doubts and lack faith.
They are not unforgivable sins.
Jesus wants to reveal Himself to us again, just as He did with Thomas, Peter and the rest of the 11. Will you let Him?
Then we too will have the same opportunity once more to realise our destiny.
Go on, give Jesus another chance.
John would say – and so would I – let Him do it – for He alone is the truth, “the Christ, the Son of God” and through believing in Him, you will experience “Life in His Name.”
