Hebrews 10:11-14

“Day after day every priest stands and performs his religious duties; again and again he offers the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. But when this Priest had offered for all time one sacrifice for sins, He sat down at the right hand of God. Since that time He waits for His enemies to be made His footstool, because by one sacrifice He has made perfect forever those who are being made holy.”

There is a difference between the symbol and the Reality.

Although symbols are both important and significant, once the Reality is in place, the symbols pale into insignificance. Communion is a symbol – a vital symbol – but it will give way to the Reality when Jesus comes and takes us to be with Himself forevermore.

The sacrifices were important because they did two things. They brought temporary relief and pointed to the Reality. The sacrifices brought forgiveness, but they did not empower the sinner. They brought temporary peace with God until the sinner became guilty again. But they did bring forgiveness – however temporary. Blood has to cover sin – it is the price that must be paid – for “without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness” (Hebrews 9:22).

Just imagine being a priest. Yes, it was a ‘full-time’ job. You would be continuously preparing and ‘executing’ sacrifices but they would have to be constantly repeated. Indeed, there was no chair provided for the priest as he was permanently on his feet. He would see the same people come back again and again. The only respite was that he knew he was pointing forward to something and Someone far greater and yet to come.

That Someone was Jesus. The something was the Cross and the some time was Good Friday. Then it happened. Jesus – “the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world” (John 1:29) – was sacrificed there at Golgotha (Skull Hill) (see Matthew 27:33-50 & Isaiah 53).

His body was flogged – 39 lashes – he was slapped across His face, spat at, had some of his beard ripped away and He was beaten with sticks. The ‘crown’ of thorns was pushed onto His head until blood ran down His cheeks. His wrists were nailed to the Cross along with His ankles, which had been joined together and then the Cross was raised and dropped into the hole prepared for it with such a jolt the whole of Jesus’ body would have been wrenched. He was then left to die in His own time while ‘everyone’ stayed looking on.

He gave up His life, and after His body was taken down from the Cross, the soldier thrust his spear into His side and out came blood and water. His body was broken, His blood was shed, the Perfect Sacrifice was killed and the Reality to which all the others pointed – was incarnated, revealed and accepted.

Jesus arose the third day and ascended into Heaven and He sat down at the right hand of [God]” (Hebrews 1:3). The highest place in existence.

“He sat down” to –

1. Show His work was complete. “For all time one Sacrifice for sins.”

2. Show He has ultimate authority – nothing in Heaven or on earth will cause Him to ‘stand up’ in panic.

3. Await the final destruction of all His enemies – “His enemies to be made His footstool.

Nothing will change His position. Satan and his forces will not, as some suggest, order the end of this world. God is orchestrating its climax. He is in total control and in total command.

Never ever forget that. Even when ‘all hell’ appears to be let loose. Never ever forget that God is in Sovereign control.

Jesus has “Sat down”.

He has not abdicated nor delegated that authority to anyone else.

Remember that through His sacrifice we “are being made holy”. Yes, we are ‘set apart’ – but we are being made ‘more’ pure and righteous through the process of sanctification in preparation of His appearing.

Come, let us bow down and worship our Very Great High Priest – JESUS.
