Hosea 11:1

“When Israel was a child, I loved him, and out of Egypt I called my son.”

Israel and Egypt are inextricably linked together.

God is the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob (who became Israel – see Genesis 32:28). You will remember that Abraham spent time in Egypt during times of famine (Genesis 12:10); Joseph was sold as a slave into Egypt and the rest of the family also joined him there because of another famine in Canaan (see Genesis 37 & 42-47). So his 11 brothers with their families, and of course Jacob, his father, lived and eventually died there in Egypt.

The Hebrews remained slaves until Moses was sent by God to deliver them as the ‘Children of Israel’. A new title for a new people who would experience the dynamic power of the Creator God who was to be their Saviour, Redeemer, Provider and Protector.

God always loved Jacob. He was a colourful character but he was a passionate man. When he met God for himself, it revolutionised his life, and from being a deceiver, he became one of the great Patriarchs of our Judaeo-Christian heritage. He was so passionate that he fought with the angel so he could receive a blessing (see Genesis 32).

God loves people who are passionate about Him. God hates lukewarmness. Even when we turn to the last book of the Bible, we still find God hates those who are lukewarm (see Revelation 3:16). Remember, Jacob’s brother, Esau, was lukewarm. He couldn’t have cared less about God or his godly heritage.

Jacob wanted all of it. ‘Jacob’ was the earthly son – ‘Israel’ was the spiritual child. God loved him dearly and protected ‘him’ in Egypt. But Egypt was not his home. The Promised Land of Canaan was his destiny and so God went down and rescued him – and brought him out of Egypt by a mighty deliverance and an outstretched arm.

God got the Children of Israel out of Egypt, but they unfortunately never allowed Him to get Egypt out of them. They constantly wanted to go back at the slightest challenge – instead of trusting in God.

Jesus – God’s Son – His beloved Son, His One and Only Son also went into Egypt. He was taken there to escape the murderous intent of Herod (see Matthew 2:13-23). Once Herod was dead, God once more called His Son out of Egypt – and Jesus came out and brought the Promised Land to us. Hallelujah!

Egypt is often seen as a picture of ‘the world’, which is in opposition to God. It is a picture of carnal passion, pleasure, provision and profit – a life of ‘sight’ rather than ‘faith’ (Lot rather than Abraham).

Jesus bought us and brought us up ‘out of the world’ – but have we got the world ‘out of us’? Where are you in relation to Egypt, today? Are you ‘in the world’ or is ‘the world in you’?

God loves you and calls you out of Egypt, out from under this world’s domination and into the freedom of the Kingdom of His Son, Jesus Christ.

Come out from the world – leave Egypt today – and enter the Promised Land right now.

Don’t just believe what you see. By faith hold on to what you have been promised.

We do not belong to this world – the BEST is yet to come.
