Leviticus 26:3-4
If you follow My decrees and are faithful to obey My commands, I will send you rain in its season, and the ground will yield its crops and the trees of the field their fruit.
God is a good God.
The instructions for The Year of Jubilee were to bring joy, encouragement, renewed relationships and release. Here, God was establishing a whole series of promises and blessings that flow naturally from following the ways of God and from being obedient to them and His will.
Then He enumerated the curses that flow naturally from disobedience (v 14 - 39), and what would happen if they repented and turned back to Him (v 40 - 45).
This is typical of God. He starts with the blessings. He made man to follow Him and to be blessed continually. That has always been the will of God - to bless His people. What were those blessings? Rain, crops, fruit, grain harvests that continued until the grape harvest, which continued until sowing; all the food they could eat; and safety in the land. Peace, protection, and a lack of fear. No wild animals, nor sword; success in battle against overwhelming odds; prosperity and multiplication; His divine Presence at all times and protection from slavery.
What more could they want? What more can you or I want? God has promised everything we could ever need or dream of, so why do we reject Him? Why do we ignore Him? Why, oh why do we disobey Him? It is totally illogical.
And on the other side? Sickness and disease; enemies would devour their crops and rule over them. Fear would terrorise them. Lack of rain, droughts with crop and tree failure. Wild animals would attack and kill both their animals and children; and there would be wars and plagues; famine and cannibalism. All these would flow naturally from disobedience. (Just as when it is raining, if you move out from under the umbrella - you will get wet.)
God then ends by reminding them that though there are consequences, they can still turn back to Him. That is the unchanging nature of God - it’s a ‘Ring of Truth’! He is a Good God who wants His blessings and His best to come to us all - that is His unchanging desire. However, He is fully aware that man is by nature rebellious, and so He warns us of what follows naturally from disobedience as a deterrent. It is not a threat - it follows naturally - not vindictively - naturally - and He goes on to say that even then, there is hope and a way back.
Listen - we are not victims, we are choosers. We choose to obey or disobey. It is not an involuntary act either way. We have to make up our own minds and be responsible for our actions.
Don’t be jealous of those Christians who appear to live in constant blessing if you have chosen to ignore God’s demands, or choose to disobey Him. Because then you have chosen to move out from underneath His lifestyle of blessing.
But also never forget, that there is a way back. It’s called repentance, and if followed, it is the pathway which returns to us all the blessings promised in the first place.
