1 Samuel 24:10

“This day you have seen with your own eyes how the Lord delivered you into my hands in the cave. Some urged me to kill you, but I spared you; I said, ‘I will not lift my hand against my master, because he is the Lord’s anointed.’”

Just because you are the Lord’s anointed doesn’t necessarily mean life will be easy.

Samuel anointed David when he was a mere boy. He had to wait many years before the fulfilment of the anointing. His waiting included fighting Goliath; soothing Saul’s spirits when he was angry by playing the harp; dodging his spear and javelin and then the all-out attack where he was hunted from village to village, and cave to cave. He even had to join the Philistines for a while. He knew what it was to be hunted like an animal, a fugitive from justice and an outcast.

But God knew his heart. No matter the opposition, the misunderstandings, the misrepresentation, the treachery and totally unjustified antagonism, David never forgot that Saul was God’s anointed leader.

Oh, I’m sure David knew only too well that God had rejected Saul as king and everything he did was contrary to the will of God and yet, not once would he take issues into his own hands. His anointing was up to God. God initiated it and He would see it come to pass no matter how long it would take, and he, David, would not pre-empt it even though he himself was given many an opportunity and plenty of encouragement to do so.

It takes a certain type of person to cope with those pressures. Someone who knows who they are in God and can let God be God and fulfil His purposes. It takes a humble servant spirit and it takes meekness. Meekness is not weakness but the sure confidence that God is in control and true to His word and promises, no matter the circumstances.

David knew where his strength, security and anointing came from. Not himself, not Samuel, not men but from God. Even overt popularity did not cause him to take up a position against Saul. Never did he raise an army against Saul. His small band was part of God’s sustaining help but his major support and his courage came from God Himself and David’s relationship with Him.

The Shepherd boy had learnt many lessons in the solitude and heat of the desert that would help sustain him in the heat of the battle without and within.

Tell me - has God anointed you for something special and do you feel that it is as far away today as it was before you knew the anointing? Don’t give up. Trust God, He knows what He is doing. You will never be able to bring it to pass, as He intends, in your own strength.

Wait on the Lord. Let Him complete His work in you first, so that when you come into the fullness of His anointing, you can handle it. The process is like a flower forming. Open it before it is in full bloom and you destroy it.

Remember David - it is well worth waiting.
