Proverbs 26:2
Like a fluttering sparrow or a darting swallow, an undeserved curse does not come to rest.
Spiritual warfare.
The Church, especially the so-called charismatic or Pentecostal church, went through a fierce phase of ‘spiritual warfare’ at the end of the 1980’s and beginning of the 1990’s.
So much so that many Christians got to the point where they saw demons ‘in every cupboard’, ‘under every mattress’, and as the ‘reason’ for every failure, sin or adverse circumstance.
The enemy was blamed for everything from colds to plane crashes, from poverty to drought. He was given far too much ‘power’, ‘prominence’, and ‘prayer’.
The Bible tells us that “the heart of man is deceitful above all things and beyond cure” (Jeremiah 17:9). We can’t blame Satan for that. That is our inherent state, indeed our inherited state, and it remains so due to the act of our will.
We should never blame the enemy for our own weakness, stupidity, wilful disobedience, or ignorance of God and Biblical principles. The enemy is not all-powerful, his forces are not omnipresent, nor are they all-knowing.
If we take the picture (Revelation 12:4) that Satan fell and took a third of the angels with him – it means twice as many angels stayed with God. That is, by my calculation, a 2:1 majority.
Secondly, Satan is a created being – he is not God – he is not even ‘a god’. Yes, he is not a figment of the imagination either – he is real and he is wickedness and evil personified but he is not God. He is not divine, he is not eternal, and he is definitely not infinite.
Not only that, he lost in Heaven, he lost in the Garden of Eden, he lost at Bethlehem, he lost in the wilderness, he lost in the Garden of Gethsemane, he lost at Calvary and he lost at the ‘empty’ tomb.
On the other hand, Jesus won at every place. He rose from the dead and led His enemies captive. He won the Victory at the Cross, and in rising from the dead He showed the principalities and powers that He had won a Decisive Irreversible Victory (see Colossians 2:15).
So why do we have so much trouble with Satan? We give him authority.
“An undeserved curse does not come to rest.” That is fact. If it comes to rest, it is deserved. We give him authority by listening to him instead of God, by being disobedient to what we know is true and God’s will. We believe the lies of the enemy and those he sends to discourage us, rather than believing and relying on the TRUTH of the Word of God.
We need to “take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ” (2 Corinthians 10:5).
Keep true to the Lord Jesus Christ and Satan will never ever have any authority over you, nor will those who curse you.
“There is NOW NO CONDEMNATION for those who are IN Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life set me free from the law of sin and death” (Romans 8:1–2).
