Zechariah 4:6
So he said to me, “This is the word of the Lord to Zerubbabel: ‘Not by might, nor by power, but by MY SPIRIT,’ says the Lord Almighty.”
Read My Lips.
This is a ‘Ring of Truth’, a divine principle, which not only runs throughout the whole of Scripture but also describes most adequately the ways of God. It brings definition to who God is. As the title shows – He is the Lord Almighty. No power on earth or in the heavens is greater – no might of an enemy, man or nation is greater than that of the Lord Almighty.
I love the term used by the Angel who met Joshua just prior to the opening offensive of the Promised Land Campaign. The people had just crossed the Jordan River and were camped in front of Jericho. As Joshua approached Jericho, a man met him "with a drawn sword in his hand.” “Are you for us or for our enemies?” “Neither, but as Commander of the Army of the Lord I have now come” (Joshua 5:14). Not a bad sized army, is it?
Listen, the Red Sea parted, not by Moses’ rod, but by “My Spirit” (see Exodus 14). Jericho fell, not because of the vibration of the shouting, the walking and/or the sound of the trumpets but by “My Spirit” (see Joshua 6). Gideon defeated the Midianites, not by pots, lamps and shouts but by “My Spirit” (see Judges 7). Samson ‘brought the house down’ by “My Spirit” (see Judges 16). David despatched Goliath not by a slingshot but by “My Spirit” (see 1 Samuel 17). As Jonathan said, when he attacked and beat the Philistines, “Perhaps the Lord will act on our behalf. Nothing can hinder the Lord from saving, whether by many or by few” (1 Samuel 14:6).
The Spirit of the Lord – “My Spirit” – created the heavens and the earth. The point is, God is in a league, in a class of His own. We seem to think God is just a bit stronger than Satan. No way. He is totally and immeasurably superior. God not only has might, He has power and Authority. Authority is something totally foreign and unknown by the enemy. God has Splendour and Majesty. The enemy just cringes at the thought, let alone the sight.
But listen.
Listen (1) It also shouts ‘Grace’. God invites us to be part of what He is doing on earth. Whether it is rescuing Hebrews from Egypt, Israel from the Midianites or the Philistines or as in Zerubbabel’s case – rebuilding the Temple. They are all ‘plans of God’. But He invites us to be a part of them.
What amazing grace – that I could ‘help’ God. Who was the greatest?
Moses, Joshua, Gideon, Samson, David, Jonathan, Solomon or Zerubbabel? None. Why? Because it was all accomplished by “My Spirit” – the Spirit of the Lord.
That is why we should never make comparisons between denominations, churches, ministries, or people. The issue is this: any and all ‘success’ is due to “My Spirit” (The Holy Spirit). That’s why when any one prospers, we should all rejoice (see 1 Corinthians 12:25-26). We should rejoice instead of getting jealous because we are seeing evidence of this promise. It is “My Spirit” that is doing it.
Listen (2) You can try as hard as you like but it will never happen the right way until “My Spirit” does it. So stop trying to do it all yourself and – let Him do it.
Listen (3) If God has given you a vision, and all seems lost and impossible – Watch Out. Watch this space. It is then that only God can do it and guess what? It will be accomplished… “Not by might, nor by power, but by My Spirit.” Says the Lord Almighty.
It cannot fail because God cannot fail. No mountain can stand. What has started will be completed.
Read verses 6-10 again; they are dynamic.
Make them yours too, and then ‘hold on to your hat’.
