Numbers 6:24-26

The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make His face shine upon you and be gracious to you; the Lord turn His face towards you and give you peace.

We will notice as we go through the Scriptures that we discover some real nuggets hidden in what seem to be the strangest of places.

Here, in a book of census and censure, we find a trophy of grace and a bar of true gold. It is stamped with the hallmark of the heart of God. God is a good God, and if we realise nothing else, let us constantly hold on to this eternal ‘Ring of Truth’!

God instructs Aaron, through Moses, how he is to bless the people of Israel, “So they will put My Name on the Israelites, and I will bless them” (v 27).

No conditions, no requirements, no expectations - just divine grace. You say it and I will bless them. God entrusted that Ministry to them. What a privilege - to be able to say (command) a divine blessing on people. Even today, as we recite this blessing over people, both they and we are blessed. A joy rises within us and peace wells up like a never-ending stream.

Why? Because the blessing and promises of God are irrevocable and depend not on human perfection, performance or achievement but solely on the eternal grace of our Everlasting Father. The blessings are encapsulated in Leviticus 26, which we read 2 days ago - blessings in every area and sphere of our lives.

He will “keep” us - He is our Protector and Provider. Nothing can ever happen to us of which He is unaware. And He will always be ready to help us through difficult circumstances so we can overcome them for His glory and our benefit.

“The Lord make His face shine upon you and be gracious to you.” Not only will He turn His face towards us, which sin will not permit Him to do, but also His face will “shine upon” us. So much so that like Moses, we will need a veil to hide the brilliance. But remember it comes from a sustained, time-consuming, intimate relationship with Him.

Yes, we need God to “be gracious” to us - but that is, always has been, and always will be, His unchanging nature. Even when we ‘blow it’ as a Christian - He is still “gracious” and His love is still shining down upon us. He knows how frail and unfaithful we are. Nevertheless, He is always ready to forgive and make us righteous. He also knows sanctification is a long haul.

“He will turn His face towards us.” He will give us His full, undivided attention if we seek Him with all our hearts.

He will “give” us “peace”. Not temporary peace as the world gives, but peace which casts out fear, overcomes disappointment, pain, sickness, bereavement and rejection, and gives inexpressible joy.

Do you feel blessed today? If not, read these words again - as my prayer for you - which my Father will carry out as promised.
