Proverbs 31:10
A wife of noble character who can find? She is worth far more than rubies.
I can.
Verses 10–31 describe my wife beautifully – so I dedicate today’s reading to her. This chapter comprises proverbs not of Solomon but King Lemuel – actually taught to him by his mother. Maybe Solomon had too many wives to be able to find one like this.
This chapter and these verses provide some excellent wisdom for young men and women. They were given to a king – but we are all princes and princesses – children of the King of kings if we have been adopted into His family through faith in the substitutionary death and resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ.
These verses also elevate the place and role of women, wives and mothers. In an age where the role of women has been denigrated once more to the place of objects of delight for men, or that of ‘circus animals’ where they have to constantly ‘perform’ in business before they are given any recognition, it is good to be reminded that God considers the role of a wife and mother as a woman’s highest calling. This is the most basic foundation of a stable society.
Yes, the verses show that she is hardworking and industrious, but she does it willingly – not to ‘prove’ who she is but to invest her efforts in her family and have extra to give to others. She doesn’t sit around gossiping with other women but devotes her time blessing her family and her community. Indeed, so much so that her husband is respected because of her work and love.
Because she is not idle, not only does she model the benefits of work and creativity – especially with her own hands – but also through it, she has learned wisdom, which she is able to impart to and invest in others.
Her children are proud of her. How many mothers can say that today? Most children hardly spend any time with their parents because their parents are separated or dysfunctional. They can’t wait to leave home and the concept of going out with their mother beyond the age of 10 is totally foreign. Not so here.
The children are proud of her and so is her husband. It has nothing to do with charm or beauty but everything to do with character. No matter how a woman may look on the outside, the beauty and strength of her character shines through and is totally absorbing and very attractive.
The book ends with the challenge – “Give her the reward she has earned, and let her works bring her praise at the city gate” (v 31).
Go on, praise her.
If you are a woman reading these verses, use it as a mirror and be encouraged as you follow its principles. If you are a man, you know what to look for in a wife. If you are a husband, start treating your wife more and more as a precious treasure and then notice the difference. And guess what? Praise her.
Praise her when you are on your own together.
Praise her in front of your children.
Praise her in front of guests on her special birthdays and anniversaries.
Why not do what the Jewish men are expected to do? Read, recite or sing these verses to your wife every Friday evening.
Go on – she’s worth it and it will do her a power of good.
