Zechariah 14:16

“Then the survivors from all the nations that have attacked Jerusalem will go up year after year to worship the King, the Lord Almighty, and to celebrate the Feast of Tabernacles.”

It will happen.

Before getting into our verse today and leaving Zechariah, I want to refer to a few verses we have had to miss looking at in depth. (You should read the whole book yourself; it is so full of good things – like all of the books.)

“From Judah will come the cornerstone” (Zechariah 10:4). The most important part of a building after the foundation is the capstone or cornerstone, which not only completes it but also keeps it all together. His Name is Jesus and He is the Lion of the Tribe of Judah. Yes, He came from Judah’s line. He is the only authentic Cornerstone today. (See also Mark 12:1-12 & 1 Peter 2:4-8.)

“I told them, ‘If you think it best give me my pay; but if not, keep it.’ So they paid me 30 pieces of silver. And the Lord said to me, ‘Throw it to the potter’ – the handsome price at which they priced Me! So I took the 30 pieces of silver and threw them into the House of the Lord to the potter (Zechariah 11:12-13).

“Judas Iscariot – went to the chief priests and asked, ‘What are you willing to give me if I hand him [Jesus] over to you?’ So they counted out for him 30 silver coins” (Matthew 26:14-15).

When Judas… saw that Jesus was condemned, he was seized with remorse and returned the 30 silver coins to the chief priests and the elders. ‘I have sinned,’ he said, ‘for I have betrayed innocent blood.’… Judas threw the money into the Temple and left… “The chief priests picked up the coins and said, ‘It is against the law to put this into the treasury, since it is blood money.’ So they decided to use the money to buy the potter’s field as a burial place for foreigners. That is why it has been called the Field of Blood to this day. Then what was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled: ‘They took the 30 silver coins, the price set on Him by the people of Israel, and they used them to buy the potter’s field, as the Lord commanded me’” (Matthew 27:3-10).

Isn’t that incredible? The Word of the Lord comes true. It will never pass away. (See also Jeremiah 32:1-15.)

The Feast of Tabernacles is described in Leviticus 23:33-43.

In Deuteronomy we read, Three times a year all your men must appear before the Lord your God at the place He will choose: at the Feast of (Passover) Unleavened Bread, the Feast of Weeks and the Feast of Tabernacles. No man shall appear before the Lord empty-handed: Each of you must bring a gift in proportion to the way the Lord your God has blessed you” (Deuteronomy 16:16-17).

The offerings are enumerated in Numbers 29:12-39.

Why must everyone appear before the Lord at the Feast of Tabernacles? Why should all the nations celebrate with them at the Feast of Tabernacles?

I think there are a lot of reasons. The Feast of Tabernacles remembers the time God supernaturally protected and provided for the Israelites as they wandered through the wilderness. It was a time to rejoice and celebrate the goodness of God. The account in Leviticus is awesome. (Also, some believe it was probably around The Feast of Tabernacles that Jesus was born.)

But I think we read an even more significant reason in John 7. On the last day of the Feast, Jesus dramatically announced to everyone that He was the Living Water that came from the Rock in the Desert. And that His Spirit would come to all. The Promise of the Holy Spirit was fulfilled in Jesus and experienced at Pentecost.

Thus the entire world would come to celebrate this wondrous Feast. Every race and nation is blessed by Jesus – Jews and Gentiles – not just Israel.

As Joel prophesied, His Holy Spirit has been poured out on all flesh (see Joel 2:28). The Promises of God are for all of us – if we will only believe, accept them and appropriate them for ourselves.

Isn’t that terrific? Isn’t that worth celebrating?

Go on – do it today, right now.
