Romans 8:37-39
“No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
Hallelujah! Amen.
Well, I’ve jumped right on to the peak of Everest.
Time and space do not permit us to climb slowly to the top. If you wish to look at the themes of Chapters 3-6, you would do well to read my other devotional book, “Sold Out For Jesus”, where interestingly, I spend most of October studying them.
Chapter 8 is indeed the summit. It highlights the difference between a life which is carnal and motivated by the law (bringing condemnation and fear), and a life which is empowered by the Holy Spirit, bringing freedom and peace.
None of us is perfect; on the other hand, God has given us His Holy Spirit so that we can live a totally victorious life. Paul spends time contrasting the dead existence without Christ and the dynamic existence, which comes through His Eternal Life within us. “For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship. And by Him we cry, “Abba, Father” (v 15).
The law condemns us and makes us fearful of God. Jesus died, fulfilling the demands of the Law, and thereby set us free. Not only that, He has given us His Spirit so that we can approach God – not in our strength and unrighteousness but in the righteousness of Jesus Christ, His Son, so that we can actually call Him – “Daddy.” No, not disrespectfully, but out of genuine loving obedience and the desire for intimacy and His will in our lives.
God sees us as He sees Jesus. Isn’t that awesome? If only we could fully grasp that. Most of us can’t because we don’t understand what Father thinks of His Beloved One and Only Son, or how much Jesus, His Son, loves us.
Oh yes, we sing the songs and quote the Scriptures but it is obvious by our lives that we don’t understand it. It is not just for singing about or even knowing. It is for appropriating for ourselves. It is for living. That is why it is the peak of Everest. You are the Prince or Princess of the King of Kings. Now go and live as one.
Most of us struggle with low self-esteem. Be honest, we do. If we could but grasp our ‘position’ in God’s family, that would be dealt with once and for all, for time and eternity. Don’t look at and accept what the world says (or even maybe your family, parents, spouse or children). Accept what the Holy and True Word of God says. Get rid of the lies of Satan. Believe the Reality, as revealed in the Bible.
If you have given your life to Christ, and have died to sin through Water Baptism, the Spirit of the Living God makes you alive – the same Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead is living in you.
Listen, as Paul begins this chapter,
“Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus” (v 1).
The only one who condemns is the enemy, and he has no right to. Yes, the Christian life is not easy. Yes, it’s hard living in victory but we do that by faith.
That’s why Paul uses the word ‘conquerors’. We have to conquer the problems but we do it through the Resurrection Power of God. In and throughout the process, we know we can never be separated “from the love of God.”
It doesn’t matter what we have to endure – we are always loved and we are bound to win in the end. Heaven proves it. It’s a ‘Ring of Truth’!
So rejoice, put a smile on your face and that skip back into your step once more.
