Psalm 46:10

Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations. I will be exalted in the earth.

This is another of the Psalms that should be high on our list for memorising. (Also if you have the time, read Psalm 45.)

This Psalm needs to be read every time you feel inadequate and up against the wall. We never need to be ‘under the circumstances’ because God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble” (v 1).

He is there beside you and He knows all about your circumstances. What you need to do is to check your attitudes. Check to see that you are looking up to Jesus, not down at your feet amidst the pressures.

God is your refuge and strength. He may not change your circumstances immediately, but He can change your attitude to one of peace, joy and hope. Look up – the Almighty God is on your side.

The Psalm goes further … “Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging” (v 2).

Here we have a picture of our ‘stable’ creation turning on its head. This is a depth of confidence most of us only dream about. We experience so much fear generated by sickness, broken relationships and debt that we have no emotional or spiritual reserves left to carry us through when the earth starts erupting around us. But God wants us to move on to a new level of trust, which eventually becomes complete.

“There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy place where the Most High dwells. God is within her, she will not fall” (v 4-5). The psalmist gives us a glimpse of heaven, which equates with John’s in Revelation 22. What a help to get our thoughts into perspective. To lift our eyes from the temporary to the eternal. None of us knows what a day may bring – but it is only temporary – good or bad. Heaven is everlasting. Heaven is our eternal hope and sure future and whatever happens on earth cannot change that promise if we have accepted Jesus Christ as our Saviour and Lord. (Now that’s a great ‘Ring of Truth’!)

Verses 6-9 show that God is in total control and watches over the world to bring about His final outcome towards universal peace. Because of that, we are encouraged to “Be still and know that I AM God.”

Satan does all he can to prevent us having time to stop and be still. He does all he can to keep us busy and restless because as soon as we are still, we begin to realise the Great I AM is God.

Take time out today, regardless of your circumstances, to be still and know that I AM is your God and is your Refuge, your Fortress and your Deliverer.

He is your Everlasting Father and your Eternal Home.
