Psalm 145:7 - 13
PRAISE THE LORD FROM THE EARTH
David turns his eyes away from the heavens to come 'back to earth'.
But again he starts by focussing away from man - to the 'great sea creatures'. No, he is not endorsing or promoting evolution - suggesting that is where we all come from! Rather he is suggesting that those 'great beasts' that we see so little of and yet we know are there - (they emerge from time to time; they graciously allow us to get close occasionally but it is in toleration rather than in seeking company) - they too, should praise the Lord, if for nothing else, for their existence and daily provision.
Then he turns and considers the weather. Good English stuff, this - to talk about the weather! But David 'commands' the elements to Praise the Lord. He recognises that they display the power of God, and so they, too, can join in the chorus of praise to their Creator!
Then he addresses the mountains, hills, fruit trees and cedars. Mt Hermon standing erect, pointing endlessly upwards to a God of awesome majesty and splendour. Mt Hermon the source of the River Jordan and Sea of Galilee. The source, indeed of the fresh 'living waters', which sustain the whole of Israel and protected their life.
Fruit trees - had not God said that Israel was the 'apple of His eye'? The cedars, those fine trees that had been used both for David's Palace, and now too planned for the very Temple of God's Name.
Yes, they could all 'Praise the Lord' and cause us to do so too. Wild animals and cattle, small creatures and flying birds. Remember the old hymn? "All things bright and beautiful, all creatures large and small..." - yes, together, "the Lord God made them all" and constantly provides for them even as Jesus reminds us.
Kings, princes and rulers - remember who appoints you! Young men, young women, old men and children - come on, Praise the Lord.
For His Name is exalted, His splendour is above the earth and all heavens.
Praise the Lord and give Him thanks!
