WHEN JESUS HEARD THIS HE WAS ASTONISHED...
Usually it was the people who were astonished at Jesus!
Astounded at his teaching, astounded at his wisdom, astonished at his miracles, and astonished at his actions. But here we have the only reference to Jesus ever being astonished. Not at man's sin, not at man's rebellion, not at man's achievements, not at man's religiosity but at this man's faith.
I don't know about you but I want to astonish God with my faith, just like this Centurion. He's my type of man. He recognised the delegated authority of the Almighty God vested in Jesus. That is what gave him his faith. As has been said before - not so much "great faith in God" but more "faith in a great God".
I want to be so full of faith that, if I may picture it thus, Jesus and the angels are talking and suddenly one of them shouts out "Oh no! John is at it again. He'll believe God for any thing. Come one guys - let's go down and make it happen!"
Is God going to be astonished by your faith or by your unbelief? Take time out today to take stock. Has your faith this year astonished God? Or has He been astonished by your unbelief?
You are a child of the King of kings, - then cause Heaven to be astonished!
Commit yourself to astonish God by your faith by the end of the year at least once! Who knows - the Kingdom of Heaven might even come to earth!
Father, please help me astonish You by my faith before the year ends in Jesus name. Amen.
