Hebrews 1:1-4
“In the past God spoke to our forefathers through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days He has spoken to us by His Son, whom He appointed heir of all things, and through whom He made the universe. The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of His being, sustaining all things by His powerful Word. After He had provided purification for sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in Heaven. So He became as much superior to the angels as the Name He has inherited is superior to theirs.”
I shall never forget when the Lord opened my eyes to verse 1.
I was a 17-year old teenager at college and three of us (the other 2 were quite a bit older) had just started the first Christian Union at the College. Along came this guy to one of the early meetings. It turned out that he was a Mormon who had come ‘to obstruct and destroy’ our embryonic ministry. (He failed – we had 36 at the last meeting of the year.) One of the Mormon’s tenets of faith was that Joseph Smith (their founder 1830) was their prophet who alone was able to interpret the ways, purposes and words of God for the people. So ever after, they have followed implicitly their so-called Prophet(s).
The ‘trouble’ with that is that it runs totally contrary to this verse. “In the past God spoke… through the prophets… but [now] has spoken to us by His Son.” We don’t need to be told what to do by prophets. We have the Words of Jesus Himself in the Bible, and on top of that, we have His Holy Spirit within us whose job it is to reveal the will and purposes of God to us and enable us to carry them out (see John 16:13-15).
Yes, I know God has indeed given us the gifts of the Spirit – including prophecy and prophets – but while that ministry is dynamic – as we have seen from 1 Corinthians 14, it largely ‘supplements’ our own wisdom from God. God has revealed Himself in a Perfect Man – the Man, Christ Jesus. Jesus made the Universe – He is its Creator. He is a member of the Trinity. He is God. He is “the exact representation of God”. If you want to see the invisible God – look at Jesus. He not only created the Universe – He sustains it. If Jesus stopped sustaining it – that would be it – ‘finito, period’.
This same Jesus is the One who died and by His shed blood purifies us from all our sin. This same Jesus rose from the dead and is alive forevermore. What’s more He has “sat down at the right hand of [Father] the Majesty in heaven.” What an awesome Saviour we have in Jesus. And He wants an intimate relationship with us so He can talk to us as He did with Moses (see Numbers 12:6-8 & John 15:9-16).
Yes, He is “sat down”. Nothing is going to disturb His peace or Authority. Nothing is going to cause Him to panic. The next time He gets up is when He comes to get us and complete His reign in power.
Is this helping you to grasp something of who Jesus really is? He is not just our friend and Saviour. He is the Ultimate Authority in Heaven and on earth. No wonder the Psalmist said, “O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your Name in all the earth” (Psalm 8) and “The One enthroned in Heaven laughs” when “the nations conspire” against Him. Who do they think He is? Who do they think they are? “I have installed My King… Serve the Lord with fear and rejoice with trembling. Kiss the Son, lest He be angry and you be destroyed in your way” (Psalm 2).
Jesus Christ is Lord.
And Jesus Christ is God.
His Name is above every Name
and at the Name of JESUS every knee shall bow.
In Heaven and on earth and under the earth.
