Hebrews 4:14-16
“Therefore, since we have a great High Priest who has gone through the Heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. For we do not have a High Priest who is unable to sympathise with our weaknesses, but we have One who has been tempted in every way, just as we are – yet was without sin. Let us then approach the Throne of Grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.”
God does know how we feel.
Jesus does understand us. Jesus became a man. One of the hardest things for us to really come to terms with is that Jesus was fully Man and fully God.
For us, thousands of years after His life, death and resurrection, it is easier to see Him as God. For His disciples and contemporaries, it was harder – they saw and understood Him as a man. But He is both, although He is neither superman, nor an aloof benign Being.
Jesus was tempted in every way, just like us. All the things that assault us ‘from the world’ and from within: pride, ambition, selfishness, lust and self-preservation assaulted Him. Jesus had to conquer them all – and did. But in doing so, He found out for Himself all that we have to go through.
To some, the High Priests (and even some pastors today) seem to live in another world – away from where ‘the rubber hits the road’, but Jesus walked where we walk. He even associated with those most of us avoid, and yet through it all remained pure, spotless and holy.
Listen, what a great God and Saviour we have. He has taken all our pain, our failure, and our sin on Himself – even though He was sinless. He died to pay the penalty and after having done so arose from the dead. He then ascended into Heaven and lives today praying and interceding on our behalf before the Father. Yes, He was the Sacrifice, but now He is also the High Priest mediating for us.
Yes, we don’t worship or follow a block of wood, stone or polymer. We don’t follow an image of virtual reality. We don’t even worship a dead religious leader. We don’t serve or follow the imaginations or words of a deluded self-appointed prophet. We worship the genuine Christ. Someone who knows us even better than we know ourselves and who loves us so much that He not only died for us, but lives for us so that we can be constantly forgiven and empowered to live a righteous life.
Because of that, we can pray; “approach the Throne of Grace with confidence” for not only will He hear but He will also understand what we can’t even express. He will not only forgive but also give us the strength; His strength to overcome.
“Hold [on] firmly to the faith [you] profess.”
Don’t let go – whatever the pressure or cost – for where else will you go? (See also John 6:67-69.)
Yes, He IS just a prayer away and He is waiting to come to our aid – to forgive and give us the strength to conquer fear, addictions and failure.
Look up, my friend. He is right there beside you – wanting to hold your hand – or to carry you if necessary.
Reach out to Him right now and have a better day.
