Psalm 19:1-4
The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of His hands. Day after day they pour forth speech, night after night they display knowledge. There is no speech or language where their voice is not heard. Their voice goes out into all the earth, their words to the end of the world.
David was a shepherd boy.
He was used to spending his life in the fields 24 hours a day. He would have to constantly search for water and fresh pasture for his flock and vigilantly keep a watch out for predators and thieves. Because of that, he learnt more than most about the creation around him – the haunts of wild animals; their tracks and their strategies.
He would need to understand the weather and the signs in the clouds, which would warn of impending storms and torrential rain. He would love to see the red splendour of an evening sunset, confirming a calm night and bright morning, but would frown if he saw the same in the morning and plan to find and establish shelter. As he saw the signs of the day and recognised the phases of the moon’s cycle, he became increasingly aware that they were true and fixed. They were not man-made but governed by a Higher Hand. Not only that, but you could indeed read them and accurately forecast what was to come.
Even from my own limited study of the weather and its patterns from high school, I am amazed how accurate those principles remain. I took a Boatmaster’s Course recently and was reassured by our instructor. When he got to the section on weather, his opening gambit was, “No matter from which direction the wind is blowing, our weather comes from the west.” This is critical if you are a seaman. Yes, you need to know where the wind is blowing from now but you also need to know what the weather pattern is overall – as it always comes from the west.
David also knew and read the stars (as did all the great explorers over the millennia). From Job, we already know that certain patterns had names like Orion and Pleiades. David would have known them, and probably more, as he spent most of his nights gazing up into the unpolluted splendour of the night sky – revealing galaxy after galaxy – even to the natural eye.
Yes, no matter where we go, creation and the stars are there to remind us of the awesomeness, vastness and faithfulness of God – not just in creation but also in His love, care and grace. (See also Romans 1:19-20. It’s a ‘Ring of Truth’!)
Creation speaks of both the spiritual and moral dimensions of God.
David always recognised that they point to a God with whom He had an intimate relationship, Someone who was Big enough to sustain and maintain His Creation but also ‘Small’ enough to care for him.
God longs for you to know and experience the same.
