Jeremiah 1:4-8
The Word of the Lord came to me, saying, “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.” “Ah, Sovereign Lord,” I said, “I do not know how to speak; I am only a child.” But the Lord said to me, “Do not say, ‘I am only a child.’ You must go to everyone I send you to and say whatever I command you. Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you and will rescue you,” declares the Lord.
Yet another anti-abortion verse.
Isn’t it interesting that all those fighting for abortion are not babies? ‘We’ fight for human rights but only those that are convenient for us. The ‘Good News’ is that God knows us, loves us and has a plan and purpose for us, even from before the moment of our conception.
It is true that the Word of the Lord came to Jeremiah telling him that God had “formed... (him) in the womb” and that he was “appointed as a prophet to the nations.” But that is also true for each one of us. Yes, not just Jeremiah – you. God knows you; He knows all about you; He knew you before you were formed in your mother’s womb – before you were conceived.
Yes, every foetus is unique. Each is designed by God – each one a miracle of His hand. He knows and loves each one, no matter how they came to be conceived. The issue is not so much who are, or who were your parents and whether they loved you (or each other) or not, BUT that the Living, Almighty God created you in your mother’s womb and that He loved you right from the very beginning.
Not only that, He has “set you apart.” He has a purpose, a unique plan for your life. You have a destiny. God doesn’t want you just to exist, just to survive. He wants you to live in your destiny, to be totally fulfilled and reach your full God-designed, God-ordained, God-given potential. Isn’t that awesome?
God, the Creator of the world, loves you and wants you to feel totally fulfilled. He is the One who gives us our security, our self-worth and our true significance. All we have to do is to find out what His plan for us is and complete it.
That is not difficult either. He has promised to reveal it to us – if we ask Him. “Ask,” – said Jesus, “and it will be given to you; seek and you will find” (Luke 11:9). Yes, you may not get an angel come to see you; you may not hear the audible voice of God – but you will get an impression and a confirmation in your mind and spirit.
God is not a God of the obscure either. His plan for us is usually something we want to do anyway. God takes and uses our natural talents, our life’s training and abilities – after all He “formed” us in our mother’s “womb”, so He knows how we were pieced together – and uses it for His glory and the extension of His Kingdom. He knows our natural abilities and desires. More than that, He anoints us for His mission and gives us His spiritual gifts to enable us to do it even better. (See also Psalm 139:13-16.)
Jeremiah was “appointed a prophet.” Yes, even today, there are certain folk endowed with the specific ‘gift of prophecy’ (see 1 Corinthians 12:10) but God expects us all to be prophets in the sense of proclaiming God’s Word and His Truth to the people, both by our speech and through our lives.
Like us, Jeremiah tried to claim exemption due to being incapable but God takes our weaknesses and reveals His strength. On top of that, He promises us His presence, His power and His protection. It’s a ‘Ring of Truth’! (See also 2 Corinthians 12:9.)
What has He “set you apart” for?
