Ecclesiastes 11:6

Sow your seed in the morning, and at evening let not your hands be idle, for you do not know which will succeed, whether this or that, or whether both will do equally well.

“Keep your options open.” “Have more than one string to your bow.” “Don’t put all your eggs in one basket.”

Understandably, most Biblical pictures or analogies are of a pastoral/farming nature. But what we have here is not just worldly wisdom but a divine principle. It’s a ‘Ring of Truth’!

God is a Giver. God is an extravagant Giver. He not only gives to each of us the breath of life every second of every day, but He heals, He protects, He provides, He guides and He gives more than we could ever ask or imagine if we walk in His ways and according to His vision for us.

Paul, the apostle, understood this verse when he wrote, “so that by all possible means I might save some.” – “Though I am free and belong to no man, I make myself a slave to everyone, to win as many as possible. To the Jews I became like a Jew, to win the Jews. To those under the law I became like one under the law (though I myself am not under the law), so as to win those under the law. To those not having the law I became (like them)… To the weak I became weak, to win the weak. I have become all things to all men so that by all possible means I might save some. I do all this for the sake of the Gospel, that I might share in its blessings” (1 Corinthians 9:19–23).

Paul realised that not everyone was ready to receive the truth. So he made it as plain as he could because somewhere within these groups were those who would, nevertheless, receive it. So often we try and share the ‘Good News’ with those who aren’t ready and so give up and become disillusioned and discouraged.

God never forces anyone’s hand. Keep sharing the good news and eventually it will fall on good ground. Keep doing it because we don’t know for sure that the seed has failed. Maybe, it is just waiting for the ground to become good and then it will germinate. Our job is to sow and go on sowing, even if we never see the harvest ourselves.

However, let me encourage you. I believe we are poised at the beginning of a mighty ingathering of the harvest, so go on sowing. Otherwise, you will never be a part of the tremendous harvest that God is sending His reapers out to collect.

The chapter starts with, “Cast your bread upon the waters, for after many days you will find it again” (v 1). Be a giver of good news and bread. You will receive your reward. That’s a promise from God. Don’t give up. It WILL come home to roost.

Sow seeds into your family; sow seeds into your neighbours; sow seeds into your work colleagues, Cell/Small Group and ministry. Keep investing your resources in your local church and the poor national and international Christian Ministries.

The returns are far greater than the investment and ‘totally out of this world’.

Only Heaven itself will reveal the ‘success’ of all you have sown over the years. None will have been in vain. You will be overwhelmed by your reward and it will be better to have it then, rather than now.

So go on, go on, and go on sowing.
