Ecclesiastes 3:14
I know that everything God does will endure forever; nothing can be added to it and nothing taken from it. God does it so that men will revere Him.
Take time to think.
Wisdom is meaningless; Pleasure is meaningless; Toil/work is meaningless and so too is folly. So concluded the Teacher in Chapter 2.
This is the ‘time’ chapter that is so famous. It starts:
“There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under Heaven:
A time to be born and a time to die,
A time to plant and a time to uproot,
A time to kill and a time to heal,
A time to tear down and a time to build,
A time to weep and a time to laugh,
A time to mourn and a time to dance,
A time to scatter stones and a time to gather them,
A time to embrace and a time to refrain,
A time to search and a time to give up,
A time to keep and a time to throw away,
A time to tear and a time to mend,
A time to be silent and a time to speak,
A time to love and a time to hate,
A time for war and a time for peace.”
It is good to reflect on these statements because so often we rush around without stopping to think. If there was ever a challenge in this book, it is to ‘Stop and think’.
Take advice from someone who has done all the rushing around, all the acquiring of things, all the searching, and all the striving for knowledge, truth and excellence from the world, ‘under the sun’. Listen to his conclusions.
Think it through. Don’t re-invent the wheel – listen to experiential wisdom. He’s been there. He’s got the T-shirt, money, qualifications and medals. He knows the hollowness of that success.
Listen, “He (God) has made everything beautiful in its time” (v 11) – learn to trust God and have patience. He will bring it about – whatever His perfect will is.
Don’t you want that? Really? Then, be patient.
“He has also set eternity in the hearts of men” (v 11) – that is why we will never be satisfied until we are satisfied spiritually. There is a God-shaped vacuum in all of us that only Christ can fill. This earthly life is not all there is.
“I know that everything God does will endure for ever; nothing can be added to it and nothing taken from it” (v 14). That means that all God does is secure and perfect. It will remain through all the stresses, strains and pressures of life. Isn’t that worth having?
“God does it that men will revere Him” (v 14). So that God can satisfy His ego? Of course not. But so that we can recognise where true satisfaction comes from and separate ourselves out for Him. So we can be ‘Sold Out For Jesus’ and reach our full potential and God-given God-ordained destiny.
We each have exactly the same amount of time in a day, a week, a month and a year.
And we are accountable for how we spend it.
How do you spend yours? Is there anything you should change?
If so, what on earth is stopping you?
