1 Peter 1:18-21

“For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your forefathers, but with the precious blood of Christ, a Lamb without blemish or defect. He was chosen before the creation of the world, but was revealed in these last times for your sake. Through Him you believe in God, who raised Him from the dead and glorified Him, and so your faith and hope are in God.”

‘Redeemed’ means ‘to buy back’. It’s a ‘Ring of Truth’ running throughout the Bible.

It reminds me of the story of a boy who built a yacht. He carved it out of a block of wood. He shaped it, painted it, made its mast, rudder, sheets, sails, lines and tackle. He took it for sea trials and found it settled in the water in perfect balance. He enjoyed sailing it attached to a piece of string. However, one day there was an offshore wind. A gust blew it out of his reach and his swimming capability. He lost it. He was devastated.

However, a few weeks later, to his utter amazement he saw it in the window of the pawnshop in the high street. He went in and told the owner that the boat was his; he could prove it, and told him the story of how he lost it. The shop owner listened and then said, “If you want it back you’ll have to pay the price for it, won’t you?”

He had very little, but he was determined to get it back. So being a young lad, he delivered papers in the morning and milk at night until he had saved up enough. He went back to the pawnshop and it was still there. He went in and said to the owner – “Please may I have my boat back?” “You will have to pay for it first,” said the owner. The boy placed the money on the counter. The owner replied, “Take it, and get out of here.”

As the boy got outside, he grabbed the boat in his arms and hugged it to his chest. “I made you, I lost you, I found you and I have bought you back. You are twice mine now and I will never let you go.”

As we have seen all through the Bible – there is always a price to be paid; a sacrifice is needed to bring us back into a relationship with God.

That is exactly what Jesus says to you, today. “I made you and I’ve bought you back and I will never let you go.” The difference is, as Peter says, “It was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed … but with the precious blood of Christ.”

Hello! He is talking to you today. Jesus has redeemed you – He died to buy you back – that is how much He loves you – that is how you can know you are worth something to God – you are priceless to Him.

As Jesus said in Matthew 13 – you are a pearl of great price. God saw you and realised that you were so valuable that He emptied Heaven to buy you back. He sent Jesus to die for you.

Listen – to God, you are priceless and He will never let you go if you belong to Him through faith in Christ’s death for you at Calvary.

You can trust God to love you and protect you. God raised Jesus from the dead and glorified Him so you could put your faith and hope in Him.

Isn’t that terrific news? Spend a few moments right now savouring the peace and joy that truth brings.

Now go and tell someone else who doesn’t know it yet.
