1 Peter 2:9-10
“But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His wonderful light. Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.”
This is the other side of the coin.
Yes, we are saved, called out and redeemed individually but we are not to stay that way.
It has always been the heart’s desire of God to redeem “a people” for Himself. He called Abraham out of all the people of the world, to establish “a nation” through him, who would be separate and special for God (Genesis 12:2).
When Moses was sent by God to Pharaoh in Egypt, he was sent with the message “Let MY people go!” (Exodus 8:1) He redeemed a “people” for Himself. “Now if you obey Me fully and keep My covenant, then out of all the nations you will be My treasured possession. Although the whole earth is Mine, you will be for Me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation. These words you are to speak to the Israelites” (Exodus 19:5-6).
It’s a ‘Ring of Truth’ through the whole Bible! The wonder is that now it is not just for Israel, but for us too. All of us who have put our faith and trust in Christ become part of “a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God.”
Isn’t that fantastic? Doesn’t that just make your heart rejoice in thanks and praise? We join with all those who trust in Christ as their Saviour and obey Him as their Lord. It links with Jesus’ prayer, where He prays firstly that the disciples will be one in unity and then with all those that would believe in Him through their message (see John 17:20-21).
If you think about it – we believe through their message. Because they told someone, who told someone… who told us. So we are linked, not only with every Christian who is alive today, worldwide – estimated at over 2 billion people – but also with all those who, down through the centuries, have believed in Jesus since His disciples told the message to others.
But there is even more. We are linked with the Israelites who came out of Egypt; we are linked to Abraham and we are linked with Abel. It includes all those referred to in Hebrews 11 and the “great cloud of witnesses” (Hebrews 12:1).
Listen – you are not on your own. You are part of a huge winning team.
Together, we have been “called… out of darkness into His wonderful light.”
Why? So that we “may declare [His] praises”. Yes. Not only to thank Him and sing His praises to the Heavenlies but also to share the message of praise with those who, as yet, aren’t part of the family of God.
Go and “declare [His] praises” – someone may even come “out of darkness” today – if you do.
Then they too will become a part of the “people belonging to God”.
(And what better time of the year is there to do it?)
